The British outfit continues to fall behind, <strong>already in a notably worse position<\/strong> than at the beginning of 2024 &#8211; when <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/05\/06\/fernando-alonso-reveals-season-defining-aston-martin-plans\/\" target=\"_self\">Alonso<\/a> regularly fought for the top six positions. Despite this obvious decline, Aston Martin tell a different story about their situation.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Upgrades to the AMR24 fall short<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Aston Martin introduced a significant upgrade package in Budapest last weekend.<\/p>\n<p>However, unlike when other teams introduce new components, news of upgrades from Aston <strong>rarely generate excitement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Simply put, the team&#8217;s consistent failure to make meaningful improvements with upgrades has created a pessimistic attitude towards their updates.<\/p>\n<p>This sceptical approach was validated by the AMR24&#8217;s poor performance, with Alonso and Stroll fighting with midfield teams like VCARB &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/07\/23\/vasseur-defends-ferrari-development-record\/\" target=\"_self\">rather than top teams<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Aston Martin&#8217;s pace still significantly dips from qualifying to race day, which is <strong>a fundamental issue<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"P5T0wT2SQeFzNBWhLRYlwA\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/2162893172\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'P5T0wT2SQeFzNBWhLRYlwA',sig:'GG8afVlGcwr8oI8Y_cEnicnnmCO4Kt2c6b0fBTvpy6M=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'2162893172',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Aston Martin defiant<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>That said, the picture painted by senior personnel at the Silverstone-based outfit is very different.<\/p>\n<p>Engineering director Tom McCullough gave his breakdown on Aston&#8217;s latest package.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;It&#8217;s a relative game, everyone is developing. This [the upgrades] is quite a large amount of parts for us in the car,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/es.motorsport.com\/f1\/news\/aston-martin-paso-grande-mejoras-hungria-2024\/10637136\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">es.motorsport.com<\/a> quotes him as saying.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;But we have more to come as well, and we are only halfway through the year. So <strong>we have to keep developing<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We&#8217;re in that tight battle at the moment. We want to close the gap to the four teams in front.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;And that can only be achieved by bringing more parts than them and elements that make a bigger difference in lap time.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;So that&#8217;s the goal. <strong>We&#8217;re on a good development path now<\/strong>, but it&#8217;s relative to everyone else.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Regardless of how Aston Martin tries to spin the situation, their decline is undeniable.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps more concerningly, their road to recovery is increasingly unlikely &#8211; at least in this regulation cycle.<\/p>\n<p>Unless the British team can quite dramatically turn the tide, they could spend the next eighteen months as an afterthought in the midfield scrap.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Aston Martin only scored one point at the Hungarian GP, with the AMR24&#8217;s latest upgrades failing to unlock significant lap time.
