This was exemplified last season, with the American outfit failing to introduce a single update until round 18. At the end of last year, Nico Hulkenberg said the team&#8217;s regression must serve as a &#8220;message to the factory.&#8221; Within a few months, Ayao Komatsu has transformed Haas into a team capable of <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/05\/09\/f1-news-haas-will-continue-upgrade-push-in-imola\/\" target=\"_self\">keeping up in the development race<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Ayao Komatsu defies expectations with Haas<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When Guenther Steiner was team principal, Haas failed to find regular improvements with updates. According to the 59-year-old, last season&#8217;s mid-season slump was because his engineers could not find any performance in the wind tunnel.<\/p>\n<p>This explanation was generally insufficient, especially as <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/07\/13\/aston-martin-emerge-as-favourites-to-sign-adrian-newey\/\" target=\"_self\">Aston Martin<\/a> and McLaren catapulted themselves to the front in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Steiner&#8217;s justification clearly wasn&#8217;t adequate for Gene Haas, who decided to make Ayao Komatsu team principal last winter.<\/p>\n<p>Gene Haas&#8217;s rationale was that, despite limited investment, <strong>greater efficiency should see the team comfortably fighting in the midfield<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>When Komatsu&#8217;s promotion was first announced, there was plenty of scepticism. (Photo by Glenn Dunbar \/ LAT Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>A new approach to development at Haas<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When the Japanese engineer completed his first interviews as team boss, he was very direct about there being areas to address..<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the most significant area Komatsu has improved is integration between the team&#8217;s bases.<\/p>\n<p>The 48-year-old assessed that <strong>better cooperation between Haas&#8217; different headquarters<\/strong> would immediately improve performance.<\/p>\n<p>The Haas team principal calculated that better communication would allow for his personnel to more effectively use the resources at their disposal.<\/p>\n<p>Halfway through the 2024 season, the impact of this strategy is already bearing fruit. Thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/04\/28\/haas-early-upgrades-already-making-a-difference\/\" target=\"_self\">a series of upgrades<\/a>, Haas are in a far better position than at the beginning of the year.<\/p>\n<p>The first package arrived in China before the second major upgrades were fitted to the VF-24. Because of this, <strong>the VF-24 has enjoyed a steady upward trajectory<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, another update package is scheduled for right after the summer break. This should solidify the team&#8217;s position in the pecking order.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to their abysmal rate of development last year, the progress being made is substantial.<\/p>\n<p>It is also notable that Haas are not suffering from <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/07\/12\/ferrari-could-take-months-to-rectify-faulty-upgrades\/\" target=\"_self\">the same gremlins that Ferrari are encountering<\/a>. This is despite sharing the Italian team&#8217;s wind tunnel.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, performance is not the only area of improvement for the US team. Strategy, pit-stops and <strong>general operational competence have taken a clear step forward<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Hulkenberg and Magnussen&#8217;s points in Austria are a recent example of how Haas have beome a more polished outfit.<\/p>\n<p>Not only are Haas consistently fighting for points, but their prospects for <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/07\/13\/kimi-antonelli-closer-to-2025-contract-after-turning-point\/\" target=\"_self\">2025<\/a> are very encouraging.<\/p>\n<p>After years of underperformance, the American outfit is entering one of its best spells in F1.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In recent years, Haas have become known for relatively toothless mid-season development.
