The A524 suffers from several limitations and &#8211; at least so far &#8211; does not excel in any particular area. Despite finishing 4th in 2022 (ahead of <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/03\/19\/lando-norris-not-fully-comfortable-with-2024-mclaren\/\" target=\"_self\">McLaren<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/02\/28\/fernando-alonso-i-could-still-race-at-49-or-maybe-even-50\/\" target=\"_self\">Aston Martin<\/a>), their final two campaigns under these regulations could be very painful.<\/p>\n<p>Although body language is far from a definitive way to analyse team performance, Alpine F1&#8217;s verbal and nonverbal communication was difficult to ignore.<\/p>\n<p>Esteban Ocon and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/02\/28\/pierre-gasly-it-will-take-some-time-for-alpine-to-find-pace-in-2024\/\" target=\"_self\">Pierre Gasly<\/a> spent much of their pre-season managing expectations, which was very much in line with senior management.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of senior personnel, it was former Technical Director Matt Harman who emphasised the A524&#8217;s potential for development.<\/p>\n<p>According to the British engineer, the team&#8217;s focus over winter was building a platform they could improve across 2024.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_BM2-6WvRvZjrFHq4JaIjA\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/1985437424\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'_BM2-6WvRvZjrFHq4JaIjA',sig:'-jrQoplz6rv3ia5t9GW_nH8bLzLrhjRV4Aj2M59iFmI=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'1985437424',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<h3>Senior departures spark bigger concerns<\/h3>\n<p>However, Harman&#8217;s resignation was confirmed only weeks later. Evidently, this does not bode well for <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/02\/29\/f1-news-bahrain-practice-reveals-harsh-reality-of-alpine-situation\/\" target=\"_self\">Alpine&#8217;s actual and potential performance<\/a> in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, there is very limited time for Team Enstone to correct their misjudgement.<\/p>\n<p>Even without the budget cap, Alpine&#8217;s spending on Formula 1 has never been comparable to that of other big manufacturers, such as Ferrari and Mercedes.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, with a firm spending limit in place, it does not seem plausible that Bruno Famin&#8217;s team can overcome their existing deficit.<\/p>\n<p>Alpine&#8217;s position seems especially precarious given that &#8211; over the last twelve months &#8211; they have actually regressed. This is not just in terms of relative performance but also in absolute terms.<\/p>\n<p>The A524 has been slower than the A523 in the first race weekends of the season. Unsurprisingly, this puts Ocon and Gasly <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/03\/01\/alpine-without-answers-after-nightmare-bahrain-qualifying\/\" target=\"_self\">firmly at the back of the field.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Whilst sometimes one step backwards is necessary to take many steps forward, there is no evidence suggesting Alpine will make a substantial leap.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"nDV9YxzWQn5H28-A4iuNlg\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/2076461202\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'nDV9YxzWQn5H28-A4iuNlg',sig:'VoHvo_qF44riAP791cp_y3rDTrd8Vu1Dg7ZcJawNaFc=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'2076461202',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Clear Warnings for 2025<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>After all, by the time next season begins, attention will be increasingly diverted to the new 2026 regulations.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, any shortcomings over the winter break and throughout this year are likely to continue into next season. This paints a very bleak picture for the Renault-backed team&#8217;s prospects in the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n<p>Mid-season upgrades are not anticipated any time soon &#8211; since Alpine are still learning about their largely new platform.<\/p>\n<p>Even when they do arrive, the A524 will have to develop at a greater rate than rivals who are already several steps ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Several years of mismanagement are catching up to Alpine in an unequivocal fashion.
