The 2024 driver market is set to produce many surprises, with F1 news outlets indicating that Esteban Ocon could be a key player.<\/h3>\n

Alpine were at the centre of F1 news headlines just eighteen months ago, following Fernando Alonso’s switch to Aston Martin. Oscar Piastri’s subsequent move to McLaren added another dimension to this hugely chaotic period.<\/p>\n

In an effort to recover from losing two high-calibre assets, the French team<\/a> signed Pierre Gasly. The 27-year-old was selected despite his history with Esteban Ocon, which has hostility dating back to their time as juniors in karting.<\/p>\n

Heading into 2024, both Alpine drivers are on expiring contracts. On paper, the all-French duo have reasons to extend their existing deals.<\/p>\n

Both drivers secured podium finishes last season, and the Enstone-based team has potential aplenty – owing to its status as a manufacturer.<\/p>\n

Alpine make F1 news for the wrong reasons<\/h3>\n

However, last year was ultimately a disappointing one for the team. Having finished 4th in 2022, they dropped down to 6th in 2023. McLaren<\/a> and Aston Martin,<\/a> two teams still in transitional phases, emphatically out-developed Alpine.<\/p>\n

There was also internal instability, evidenced by the departure of Otmar Szafnauer and Alan Permane. This is a worrying trend at the French outfit, which is currently under the supervision of an interim team principal – Bruno Famin.<\/p>\n

Whilst one bad season isn’t cause for alarm, several years in the midfield will inevitably create question marks.<\/p>\n

For both Ocon and Gasly, the next twelve months could be pivotal. As two drivers entering their late 20s, these are (at least on paper) their prime years.<\/p>\n

With the 2026 regulation changes upcoming, the next few years will share their careers. They must leverage their value in the market to put themselves in the best machinery possible.<\/a><\/p>\n

Audi interested in Esteban Ocon<\/h3>\n

Several reports<\/a> indicate that Esteban Ocon is a top-priority target for Audi, which will officially enter F1 in 2026. The German constructor will already have influence at Sauber, which is beginning its transition to new ownership.<\/p>\n

Although there is no telling what the pecking order will be in two years, drivers might be willing to gamble.<\/p>\n

Those at front-running teams like Mercedes or Red Bull are unlikely to consider a move to Sauber\/Audi. Despite their pending manufacturer status, Audi is still an unknown quantity in F1.<\/p>\n

However, for someone at a midfield team – perhaps like Esteban Ocon<\/a> – this wild card might be worth considering.<\/p>\n

The relationship between the two Alpine F1 drivers, which has already generated many F1 headlines, could also play a key role.<\/p>\n
