However, there are no signs that 2024 will be his last year.

Fernando Alonso was a revelation this season, putting together a campaign with speed and consistency in abundance. His eight podiums with Aston Martin surpassed all expectations, with the AMR23 proving more competitive than expected.

Although a mid-season slump proved costly for Team Silverstone, Alonso still finished the year with over 200 points. The Spaniard also clung to 4th place in the standings, producing some signature performances in Zandvoort and Brazil along the way.

When evaluating Alonso’s future in Formula 1, there are many variables to consider. The first is whether the Double World Champion is still motivated to compete at the highest level.

Though this is something only he can answer, the last twelve months seem definitive proof that his motivation still remains. In many ways, Aston Martin plays a more significant role in what comes next.

If Mike Krack’s team can produce a car capable of podium finishes, Alonso will surely consider continuing until 2025. After spending several years in poor machinery, the Spanish driver is unlikely to turn down time in a front-running car.

2025 contract on the cards

Until now, both parties have voiced an interest in continuing their partnership beyond 2024 – when his current contract expires.

According to it.motorsport.com, a one-year contract extension is on the table. This would keep Fernando Alonso in F1 until the end of 2025, the final season before a huge regulatory change.

It is understood that – provided he maintains his level of performance – Aston Martin is more than happy to keep the 42-year-old.

Although a two-year extension valid until the end of 2026 is less likely, this is more of a medium-term concern. For the foreseeable issue, there should be no contract issues between the F1 Champion and his team.

Considering he accumulated 73% of the team’s points this year, retaining his services seems a no-brainer. To some degree, it is inevitable that retirement speculation will loom above the oldest driver on the grid.

However, Fernando Alonso continues to defy expectations of what is possible. With sports science and driver training becoming increasingly sophisticated, seeing athletes extend their careers is no longer uncommon.

The second oldest driver in F1 – Lewis Hamilton – isn’t showing any signs of slowing down either.

In any case, Aston Martin will likely work to silence any driver speculation relatively early. With most of the grid on expiring deals, Alonso’s continuation with the British team – despite his age – is something most will count on.

At 42 years old, Fernando Alonso often faces questions about his F1 future.
