{"id":16394,"date":"2023-10-10T20:00:46","date_gmt":"2023-10-11T00:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/?p=16394"},"modified":"2023-10-10T18:01:48","modified_gmt":"2023-10-10T22:01:48","slug":"lando-norris-comes-back-stronger-at-the-qatar-gp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2023\/10\/10\/lando-norris-comes-back-stronger-at-the-qatar-gp\/","title":{"rendered":"Lando Norris comes back stronger at the Qatar GP"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Lando Norris was hard on himself after the Sprint Race, blaming his \u201clack of talent\u201d, but his come back on Sunday proves him wrong.<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Lando Norris, had a lot of self-criticism after the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2023\/07\/27\/f1-sprint-what-is-it-and-how-does-a-sprint-weekend-work\/\" target=\"_self\">Sprint Race on Saturday<\/a> at the Qatar Grand Prix.\u00a0<\/span>The orange cars were pretty fast for the whole weekend. Both drivers were in the front rows during the qualifying session and the Sprint. However, Norris recognised he made some mistakes that costed him better results.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, he qualified in P2 with a three tenths gap from the pole man Max Verstappen. But, while waiting for his interview, his time was cancelled for track limits. This decision put him in p10 with a whole race to rebuild.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, things were going well for the McLarens. Once again, they were among the fastest on track during the Shootout session. The British driver marked a 1&#8217;24&#8243;536 lap and ended up before his teammate Oscar Piastri in SQ3. Not even Verstappen was able to beat their times. Piastri took again the lead of the quali session and Lando Norris tried to beat his time again. Unfortunately, he made a mistake in the last corner and crossed the line in p2, behind the rookie.<\/p>\n<p>In the interview after the Shootout, he said to be happy for the team and for Piastri, but not for himself.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe car is quick enough. The team is doing an excellent job. I\u2019m just not delivering on what I need to do. Of course I\u2019m not gonna be happy myself\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0<em>Lando Norris<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4>Lack of talent?<\/h4>\n<p>His frustration with himself continued later on, after the Sprint.<br \/>\nNorris had a bad start and was easily overtaken by Russell, the two Ferrari and Verstappen. The British driver passed Leclerc first and then Sainz, gaining the fourth position. The extreme heat and humidity, the mandatory three pit stops made things difficult for everybody.<br \/>\nNonetheless, Norris was able to recover from the result of the Qualifying session. At the start, he went from p10 to p6, also capitalising over the crash between Hamilton and Russell.<\/p>\n<p>The Papaya team came up with a good strategy and did amazing pitstops for both of their drivers. The British, however, would like to fight for the second place and showed his pace, gaining another fastest lap.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, it\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2023\/10\/05\/mclaren-norris-piastri-podium\/\" target=\"_self\">double podium for McLaren<\/a>, with Oscar Piastri in p2 and Lando Norris in p3.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>After the race<\/h4>\n<p>The McLaren driver appeared happier this time during the interviews and the press conference.<\/p>\n<p>He said to have learned from his mistakes and did a good job overall. The driver commented that it was one of the toughest races he had, with the heat and the 3 pitstops that challenged him (and the other drivers as well), but he was happy.<\/p>\n<p>He, then, added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cIf I wanna be honest with myself, I should have fought for two pole positions this weekend and potentially two victories. I know it\u2019s a big thing to say, but I think if things went well, if I just did a better job and didn\u2019t make the mistakes I did over the last two days, which is why I\u2019m so frustrated\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u00a0<em>But I\u2019m definitely happy with a p3, I can\u2019t take anything away from that\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<em>Lando Norris.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/McLarenF1\/status\/1711107493894533282<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>With a few races to go, McLaren and its drivers proved once more to be in the fight for the podium.
