The Canadian&#8217;s departure opens the door for Williams&#8217; academy driver Logan Sargeant or Nyck de Vries. de Vries is thought to be the team&#8217;s preferred option to become Alex Albon&#8217;s new teammate. He had to quickly step in at the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2022\/09\/17\/f1-tv-ratings-espn-sets-a-new-bar-for-the-italian-grand-prix\/\" target=\"_self\">Italian Grand Prix<\/a> when Alex Albon was rushed to the hospital with appendicitis.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Williams Racing and Nicholas Latifi will part ways at the end of the 2022 Season. <\/p>\n<p>We want to thank Nicky for his commitment and hard work over the last 3 years and wish him all the best in the next steps of his career.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/WeAreWilliams?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#WeAreWilliams<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Atlassian Williams Racing (@WilliamsRacing) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WilliamsRacing\/status\/1573235835067154433?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">September 23, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Latifi said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at Williams Racing &#8211; all the people back at the factory and those I work with trackside &#8211; for the last three years. My initial F1 debut was postponed due to the pandemic but we eventually got going in Austria and, although we have not achieved the results together we hoped we would, it&#8217;s still been a fantastic journey.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Getting those first points in Hungary last year was a moment I&#8217;ll never forget, and I will move onto the next chapter of my career with special memories of my time with this dedicated team. A massive thanks to the whole team \u2013 it\u2019s been an incredible journey and I\u2019ve enjoyed every second of it. <\/p>\n<p>Determined to end 2022 positively. 6 races left! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gN5xWsUUH2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/gN5xWsUUH2<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Nicholas Latifi (@NicholasLatifi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NicholasLatifi\/status\/1573236837464047618?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">September 23, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Team principal and CEO Jost Capito praised Latifi for his &#8220;three years of hard work,&#8221; saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;He is a great team player who has a great attitude towards his colleagues and work and is well liked and respected throughout the business.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our time together is now coming to an end, but I know he will put full effort in to maximise what we can do together for the remainder of this season.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We wish him all the very best of luck for his future, both in and out of the cockpit.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The 27-year-old will have spent three seasons with Williams, appearing in 55 Grands Prix so far and earning seven championship points. His best result of seventh came at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix, helping the team earn its first points in over two years at that point.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Latifi is ranked 21st in the Driver Championship with zero points, making him the only driver who has yet to score a point this season.<\/p>\n<p>Nicholas Latifi will also be remembered for his crash in the 2021 season finale in <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2021\/12\/12\/max-verstappen-world-champion-despite-controversy-in-abu-dhabi\/\" target=\"_self\">Abu Dhabi<\/a> that sparked the controversial ending that saw Max Verstappen crowned champion.
