{"id":10779,"date":"2022-07-31T19:35:35","date_gmt":"2022-07-31T23:35:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/?p=10779"},"modified":"2022-07-31T23:00:53","modified_gmt":"2022-08-01T03:00:53","slug":"tyler-reddick-indianapolis-wins-ot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2022\/07\/31\/tyler-reddick-indianapolis-wins-ot\/","title":{"rendered":"Reddick dominates Indy, wins in OT"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Even with the late restarts, Tyler Reddick had Indianapolis in check to win the Verizon 200.<\/h3>\n<p><b>INDIANAPOLIS \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Nine-tenths of a second.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Tyler Reddick<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> needed ninth-tenths of a second less fuel than <\/span><b>Christopher Bell<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when both pitted on Lap 52, to cycle ahead at Indianapolis. Even two late restarts didn\u2019t throw a wrench into Reddick\u2019s drive, as he out-dueled <\/span><b>Ross Chastain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <a href=\"https:\/\/racing.ap.org\/article\/reddick-wins-indy-close-best-month-nascar-career\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">win at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJust really glad to be able to do it here in Indianapolis,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is one really special place to race, and really excited to kiss the bricks here in a little bit and really excited we got 3CHI their win in their hometown.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s both his second career NASCAR Cup Series victory and second of the season. Moreover, it\u2019s his first victory since his announcement of <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2022\/07\/12\/new-analysis-tyler-reddick-23xi-racing\/\" target=\"_self\">defecting to 23XI Racing in 2024<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell, we just know what we\u2019re capable of, and we did that at Road America,\u201d he said. \u201cCertainly it was a little bump in the road, but we went out and won a race fair and square a couple weeks ago and if we change nothing, we keep working really, really hard, we find a way back to Victory Lane.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was surprised to see Chastain up next to him after he overshot Turn 1, but he prepared for that scenario.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI couldn\u2019t believe he got ahead of me,\u201d he said. \u201cI was kind of waiting to see if he was going to have a penalty because I didn\u2019t want to move him out of the way and make his race worse than what it was. Yeah, I was really surprised by that, but hey, we made it work. Hats off to Ross for trying to do that, but really glad it didn\u2019t end up working out because I\u2019d have been pretty pissed off.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The top-10 finishers<\/h3>\n<h4>The podium<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chastain\u2019s Turn 1 overshoot earned him a 30-second time penalty. Which bumped <\/span><b>Austin Cindric<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Harrison Burton<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to a podium finish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s easy on paper, right? Oh, my gosh, I feel like we probably deserved 10th at best today,\u201d Cindric said. \u201cThere was a few things I was good at but I needed the whole track to do it and I kind of struggled a bit, probably a little lower than my expectations were today, but those restarts, survival, holy crap. All I can say is \u201cwow.\u201d There\u2019s no other sport, no other form of racing other than NASCAR that you\u2019re going to get that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYeah, we\u2019ll take it,\u201d Burton said. \u201cWouldn\u2019t have picked this weekend to get my best career finish so far. Just a lot of aggression on the last restarts and putting myself in good positions. At the end of the day, it was \u2014 honestly we weren\u2019t doing our job at the start of the race. We kind of didn\u2019t execute well. I made a mistake, spun out, got into Custer there. Was kind of pretty upset midway through the race, and then just got our heads down, came in, got tires and started picking guys off and restarted in a good spot to kind of go get some more. The next lap, <\/span><b>Denny Hamlin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ran through the grass exiting Turn 6. He got loose and spun on Hullman Boulevard. On Lap 3, he ran <\/span><b>Aric Almirola<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into the grass in Turn 2. Two laps later, Hamlin overshot Turn 1 and took the penalty route in Oval Turn 4 to rejoin the race.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeah, this happened a lot in Stage 1, including <\/span><b>Brad Keselowski<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s excursion off track in Turn 1 and Chastain\u2019s lock up and hit on <\/span><b>Joey Hand<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Turn 1 the next lap.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several cars gave up stage points to short-pit the first stage. Among them Reddick, who pitted from the lead on Lap 13. <\/span><b>Chase Briscoe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stayed out to win the first stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ryan Blaney<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stayed out to take the lead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back to green on Lap 20, <\/span><b>Kevin Harvick<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> spun in Turn 1 and Hamlin hit him. Aside from Almirola run-in with <\/span><b>Kyle Larson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Stage 2 was slightly less chaotic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blaney pitted from the lead on Lap 33. <\/span><b>Christopher Bell<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cycled to the front and won the second stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The race settled into a rhythm for the final stage. The race stayed green and he fell six laps down, before a safety truck retrieved him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Larson lost his brakes and plowed into Ty Dillon in Turn 1 with 20 laps to go.<\/p>\n<h3>Playoff picture<\/h3>\n<p>With four races left in the regular season, two spots remain up for grabs for first time winners. Harvick&#8217;s late-race incident with\u00a0<strong>Alex Bowman<\/strong> and 33rd-place finish pushed him a race and a half (-96) behind the cutoff.
