Danish Grand Prix eyeing return to F1 calendar in 2020

Denmark could join the Formula 1 calendar in 2020 for the Danish Grand Prix according to Lars Seier Christensen, a Danish businessman.

Christensen, who is the co-founder of the Saxo Bank that used to sponsor Lotus and Renault, is heading up the project which would see Formula 1 cars take to the streets of Copenhagen.

Speaking to Denmark’s BT, Christensen revealed: “My task in the project is to initially assemble the private investment, and I will spend the next six months [doing so]. But before I started, it was important that we have the political will and support from Liberty Media.”

When talking about a meeting between himself and Liberty Media, Christensen continued: “It was the very positive meeting in London, and now I will spend the next six months to gather the necessary investors. It is an expensive project for us to both build the course and pay the license to Liberty. I would not mention specific amounts, but there are hundreds of millions of Kroner [needed].”

Iconic track designer Hermann Tilke has also visited the city and has created plans for the track’s layout, with the blueprints since being sent to Liberty Media. Tilke has designed many tracks that have been used in Formula 1, including the Bahrain International Circuit, Yas Marina Circuit, Sochi Autodrom, and most recently, the Baku City Circuit, although the designer has been accused of creating boring circuits.

If the Denmark did secure their bid to join the Formula 1 calendar in 2020, it would mark the first time that the Danish Grand Prix has been held since 1962 with the last F1 race in the nation being held at the Roskilde Ring as a non-Championship event won by Jack Brabham.
