Since 2017, he has fought more than once in a calendar year only once, in 2024, when he suffered back-to-back losses against Robert Whittaker and Sean Strickland. However, Costa’s desire to stay active comes after a stretch of years in which he has become increasingly associated with canceled or postponed fights.

Most recently, Costa was scheduled to face Brunno Ferreira at UFC 326 in March 2026. The matchup generated significant interest, but Costa withdrew from the bout late in the year for undisclosed reasons, leading to Gregory Rodrigues stepping in as his replacement. Before that, Costa was set to fight Roman Kopylov at UFC 317 in June 2025, but a sudden virus disrupted the final weeks of his training camp and forced him out. Fortunately, the fight was not canceled altogether and was rescheduled for UFC 318 one month later, where Costa earned a unanimous decision victory.

Perhaps the most notable withdrawal of his career came ahead of UFC 294 in October 2023, when he was booked to face Khamzat Chimaev in a highly anticipated co-main event.
