As teams around Major League Baseball begin to separate, one way or another, from the norm, it will become all the more clear which teams are true contenders and which teams should start looking ahead to next season.

One of the biggest names that has been and will continue to be mentioned in trade rumors is that of Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal. The winner of the last two American League Cy Young Awards, Skubal is in the final season of club control in Detroit and is expected to garner a massive contract in free agency.

As such, the 22-38 Tigers are likely going to trade Skubal for as many prospects as they can. The problem, though, is that the two-time Cy Young Award winner is currently on the injured list after undergoing surgery to remove floating bodies from his arm. He is, however, expected to pitch again in 2026 and could be a formidable arm for any contending MLB team in need of another dominant pitcher.

1. Chicago Cubs have been frequently named in MLB trade rumors

The Chicago Cubs are 32-28 and have had one of the biggest roller coaster seasons in recent memory. At one point, Chicago had put together two ten-game win streaks. But now, they have added in a ten-game losing streak and have not won a series since May 7.

A huge issue that the Cubs have faced since before the season began was injuries to their starting pitching. To date, there are four Chicago starting pitchers on the injured list: Matthew Boyd, Cade Horton, Edward Cabrera, and Justin Steele.

If the Cubs are to make up for their losing streak, retake the NL Central Division, and truly compete in the postseason, they need another front-line starter, and Skubal would fit that bill.

MLB trade rumors have not mentioned the Milwaukee Brewers, but it would be intriguing

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBn9SVpNk5" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3072px; aspect-ratio: 3072/2048;" ></smartframe-embed>

The Milwaukee Brewers have one of the best pitching staffs in Major League Baseball. Led by Jacob Misiorowski, they have the second-best ERA in the league and seem to churn out quality pitcher after quality pitcher, no matter how much they may have struggled with former teams.

Skubal is not a need for Milwaukee, but adding the two-time Cy Young Award winner to a Brewers rotation led by Misiorowski, Kyle Harrison, and Brandon Woodruff would give the World Series-starved team a starting rotation that no one, not even the high-powered Los Angeles Dodgers, would want to face in the postseason.

Admittedly, it is not realistic for the Brewers to go out and get Skubal, nor would it be the wisest move for them. Instead, they should focus on improving the left side of their infield.

The Los Angeles Dodgers get everyone else, why not Tarik Skubal?

Over the last several seasons, the Dodgers have made it a habit of getting the biggest names on the free agent market by paying them far more than other teams are willing to offer. They also are active at the MLB trade deadline, always looking to improve their already stacked roster.

So why not go after Skubal?

Through seven starts, Skubal is 3-2 with a 2.70 ERA. Over the previous two seasons, he was 31-10 with a 2.30 ERA.

Adding that kind of talent to Los Angeles’ already stacked roster would make them even more of a Goliath in the baseball world.

As the calendar hits June, MLB trade rumors are only going to intensify.
