It’s hard to believe that it has been 40 years since the Chicago Bears did the Super Bowl Shuffle en route to their only Super Bowl victory, defeating the New England Patriots 46-10 in New Orleans at Super Bowl XX.\u00a0 But the 40th anniversary is indeed upon us, and legendary Chicago sports media veteran George Ofman joined T.J. Rives this week on the Last Word on Sports Media podcast to discuss it all.<\/p>\n
T.J. and George take a trip down memory lane back to January 20, 1986 and a matchup that saw one of the most incredible defenses ever assembled: Buddy Ryan’s vaunted ’46’ defense with Mike Singletary, Richard Dent, Steve McMichael, and of course a young kid named William “The Refrigerator” Perry against an underdog Patriots team that upset Dan Marino and Miami (the only team to beat Chicago that season) to represent the AFC in the big game as a 10-point underdog.\u00a0 It wasn’t a surpise to George that the Bears stomped New England, they had done it all through the postseason.<\/p>\n
“They played those three playoff games against the Giants, the Rams, and the Patriots, and the defense allowed ten points and they were all in one game,” George said.\u00a0 “And that was the Super Bowl, in which they won [as well].”<\/p>\n
T.J. and George also discuss the news that along with Bill Belichick not being elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Patriots owner Robert Kraft also fell short of election.\u00a0 They point out how Kraft saved the Patriots from being moved in the 1990s to St. Louis, and still can’t seem to get into the Hall of Fame.\u00a0 They also talk about long-time Chicago columnist and radio personality Terry Boers, who died in January, and his contributions to the sports media and especially the sports talk radio landscape around the country.<\/p>\n
