{"id":1896,"date":"2025-12-02T21:16:18","date_gmt":"2025-12-02T21:16:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/media\/?p=1896"},"modified":"2025-12-02T21:16:18","modified_gmt":"2025-12-02T21:16:18","slug":"espns-paul-finebaum-will-not-run-for-the-u-s-senate-seat-in-alabama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/media\/sports-media\/espns-paul-finebaum-will-not-run-for-the-u-s-senate-seat-in-alabama\/","title":{"rendered":"ESPN\u2019s Paul Finebaum Will Not Run For The U.S. Senate Seat In Alabama"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After weeks of speculation, rumors, and even a brief ESPN suspension, Paul Finebaum has officially taken his name out of consideration for Alabama\u2019s open U.S. Senate seat in 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an exclusive statement to <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/politics\/2025\/12\/paul-finebaum-will-not-run-for-tubervilles-us-senate-seat.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AL.com<\/a>, the longtime ESPN and SEC Network personality said he was \u201cdeeply moved\u201d by the outpouring of encouragement from Alabamians urging him to jump into the race being vacated by Tommy Tuberville, who is instead running for governor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI have been deeply moved by so many people in Alabama who have reached out encouraging me to run for the United States Senate,\u201d Finebaum said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt has been a gratifying and rewarding experience. I am also appreciative of my bosses at ESPN for allowing me to explore this opportunity. But it\u2019s time for me to devote my full attention to something everyone in Alabama can agree upon\u2014our love of College Football.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With that, one of the stranger political subplots of the 2026 cycle in Alabama comes to a close.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The will-he-or-won\u2019t-he saga began in earnest after Finebaum told OutKick founder Clay Travis that he was seriously considering a Senate bid and would run if asked by President Donald Trump, whom Finebaum has publicly supported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apparently that call never came in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He had previously told OutKick\u2019s Clay Travis that he was inspired to run after the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On CNN this past Monday, Finebaum tried to deflect further questions about the Senate race with humor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When host (and fellow Alabama graduate) Kaitlan Collins asked point-blank if he was running, Finebaum deadpanned, \u201cIt\u2019s been difficult to concentrate on anything else lately but Lane Kiffin.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finebaum\u2019s exploratory period did not come without controversy. He was suspended from on-air ESPN appearances for several days after his Outkick interview with Travis expressing interest in running.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During his exploratory period, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/media\/sports-media\/paul-finebaum-teases-senate-run-on-the-clay-travis-buck-sexton-show\/\" target=\"_self\">Finebaum remained<\/a> deliberately vague on policy specifics. When pressed, he emphasized \u201cgetting the economy right\u201d and suggested his Jewish faith would complement, rather than clash with, Alabama\u2019s overwhelmingly Christian electorate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bruce Pearl, who recently announced his retirement as Auburn\u2019s basketball coach, considered a run for the Senate but decided against it as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ex-Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron announced in October that he is running for lieutenant governor as a Republican.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McCarron, however, was emphatically not on board with a Finebaum Senate bid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Finebaum now out, the Republican primary field remains fluid. Qualifying with the Alabama GOP opens January 5 and closes January 23, with the primary set for May 19, 2026.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finebaum, meanwhile, has roughly 18 months left on his current ESPN deal and made it clear he intends to see it through from the studio rather than the Senate floor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a man whose entire brand is built on stirring the pot of SEC rivalries, Paul Finebaum\u2019s brief dance with elected office may go down as the ultimate \u201cwhat-if\u201d troll of Alabama\u2019s political and sports worlds combined.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After weeks of speculation, rumors, and even a brief ESPN suspension, Paul Finebaum has officially taken his name out of consideration for Alabama\u2019s open U.S. Senate seat in 2026.
