{"id":1636,"date":"2025-10-29T00:02:51","date_gmt":"2025-10-29T00:02:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/media\/?p=1636"},"modified":"2025-11-28T01:19:57","modified_gmt":"2025-11-28T01:19:57","slug":"espn-considering-moving-scott-van-pelt-off-late-night","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/media\/sports-media\/espn-considering-moving-scott-van-pelt-off-late-night\/","title":{"rendered":"ESPN Considering Moving Scott Van Pelt Off Late Night"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ESPN president of content Burke Magnus told <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6755369\/2025\/10\/28\/scott-van-pelt-espn-burke-magnus-sportscenter\/?source=emp_shared_article\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Athletic<\/a> this week that the network is considering moving Scott Van Pelt from the 12am EST timeslot, to earlier in the day at 5pm EST.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That timeslot was previously held by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around the Horn<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and is only 30-minutes in length as it proceeds <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pardon the Interruption<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Michael Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser. <em>Pardon the Interruption<\/em> remains ESPN\u2019s highest-rated daytime program.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Life after Around the Horn<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the cancellation <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around the Horn<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the network has seen an uptick in ratings in the slot at 16%. In its place, ESPN has been airing generic editions of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SportsCenter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with various anchors for just 30 minutes in length, before shifting over to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pardon the Interruption<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and then followed by a full-hour edition of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SportsCenter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the interview with The Athletic, Magnus elaborated on the idea of moving Van Pelt to the daytime slot stating, \u201cI don\u2019t want to speak for [Van Pelt], but I think there is a limit for how long people can have their lives upside down from working late nights,&#8221; Magnus said. &#8220;This could provide some relief in that regard.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Van Pelt&#8217;s next step<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This isn\u2019t the first time either that Magnus has publicly discussed moving Van Pelt off of the evenings and into an earlier slot. Magnus told Sports Illustrated in 2023, that there was \u201c<a  href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/extra-mustard\/2023\/06\/15\/scott-van-pelt-espn-sportscenter-future\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no chance<\/a>\u201d Van Pelt would be hosting the midnight window in three years. This upcoming June will be three years since Magnus made that claim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Van Pelt has a lot on his plate these days, in fact more than ever before. Not only is Van Pelt hosting his very popular midnight SportsCenter, he is also hosting <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monday Night Countdown<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, his SVPod podcast, and serving as the lead host for ESPN\u2019s golf coverage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The network has typically used Van Pelt\u2019s show as a vehicle for postgame shows. But, it could be a move to keep one of the network\u2019s most valuable talents happy, making his workload easier as he gets older. Van Pelt is currently 59 years old and has been at <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/media\/sports-media\/should-espn-consider-divesting-espn-bet\/\" target=\"_self\">ESPN<\/a> since 2001, becoming one of the network\u2019s most-recognizable voices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If ESPN were to make life easier on Van Pelt by giving him an earlier timeslot, it wouldn\u2019t be the first time they made accommodations for him.
