{"id":1624,"date":"2025-10-27T20:37:47","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T20:37:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/media\/?p=1624"},"modified":"2025-10-27T20:37:47","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T20:37:47","slug":"is-rules-expert-ready-to-retire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/media\/sports-media\/is-rules-expert-ready-to-retire\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Rules Expert Ready To Retire?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After a long and distinguished career as an NFL referee, is Fox Sports <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\" target=\"_self\">football<\/a> rules analyst Mike Pereira going to be hanging up his microphone?<\/p>\n<p>Pereira, in his 16th season on Fox as the man every broadcast counts on to break down the rules of football when a question arises on a call, has hinted that he may wrap up his broadcast career when his current contract expires after the 2026 season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to outlive my effectiveness,\u201d Pereira <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2025\/10\/20\/mike-pereira-fox-rules-analyst\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told Tashan Reed<\/a> of the <em>Washington Post<\/em> last week. \u201cBut I don\u2019t know \u2014 who can predict the future?\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Periera Went From Interpreting Rules On Field To Explaining On TV<\/h2>\n<h3>Referee worked for over a decade in college before going to NFL.<\/h3>\n<p>Pereira was a top-level official for many years, starting with 14 seasons in the college ranks.\u00a0 He worked as a referee in the Big West Conference from 1982-1990, then moved to the WAC for five seasons before making to the jump to the NFL.\u00a0 Pereira spent two seasons as a side judge on referee Mike Carey&#8217;s crew (Carey would eventually become CBS&#8217;s rules analyst for NFL games) before becoming a referee himself.\u00a0 He would then spend 12 years running his own officiating crew before retiring from his work on the field.<\/p>\n<p>Pereira would then get a chance to blaze a new trail in the world of broadcasting.\u00a0 After meeting with Fox Sports president David Hill, he joined the network as a rules analyst, with his first game featuring the Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears and the catch by wide receiver Calvin Johnson that was called incomplete.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey turned on the damn camera and asked me what I thought, and I\u2019m sweating bullets. I thought, \u2018If I get this wrong, I\u2019ll be fired after my first weekend,\u2019\u201d Pereira told the <em>Post<\/em>. \u201cI finally said, \u2018I think they\u2019ll stay with the ruling of an incomplete pass,\u2019 which they did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pereira said he initially planned to do television for just a few years, but it&#8217;s turned into a nearly two-decade long second career.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After a long and distinguished career as an NFL referee, is Fox Sports football rules analyst Mike Pereira going to be hanging up his microphone?
