{"id":1569,"date":"2025-10-21T17:17:30","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T17:17:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/media\/?p=1569"},"modified":"2025-11-28T01:23:47","modified_gmt":"2025-11-28T01:23:47","slug":"espn-unlimited-losing-big-money-on-wwes-premier-live-events","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/media\/sports-media\/espn-unlimited-losing-big-money-on-wwes-premier-live-events\/","title":{"rendered":"ESPN Unlimited Losing Big Money On WWE\u2019s Premier Live Events"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In just over a month since the launch, the early returns on ESPN\u2019s big bet of the WWE for its new direct-to-consumer app, isn\u2019t looking too promising.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Slow start for ESPN and the WWE<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to new data from <a  href=\"https:\/\/thedesk.net\/2025\/10\/antenna-data-fox-one-espn-unlimited\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Antenna<\/a>, ESPN Unlimited garnered 2.1 million sign-ups from August 21-September 30. Of the 2.1 million sign-ups, all of them are considered new subscribers who are paying $29.99 a month or $299.99 per year. This does not include subscribers to the cable bundle who signed into the app.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To put it into perspective, ESPN\u2019s deal for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2025\/10\/20\/wwe-raw-results-10-20-25-live-updates-for-3-title-match-night\/\" target=\"_self\">WWE\u2019s<\/a> premier live events on the app is valued at $325 million per year. The value of the ESPN deal comes from how many fans end up paying for the WWE on the app.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a new report from <a  href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.f4wonline.com\/wrestling-observer-radio\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio<\/a>, the biggest weekend for new subscribers so far was during WrestlePalooza. Meltzer says of ESPN\u2019s 2.1 million sign-ups to the new unlimited app so far, 100,000-125,000 of the new subscribers came from WrestlePalooza.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>All about the Benjamins<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meltzer stated, \u201cIf every month ends up kind of like this one\u2026 it\u2019s worth $35 million a year. Now, they\u2019re spending $325 million a year for $35 million a year of revenue coming from having these WWE events. Which is a very bad number.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the short-term, ESPN is expected to lose a lot of money, but Meltzer says that down the road, they could be in good shape, \u201cThat\u2019s why these companies are losing lots of money on this type of stuff\u2014with the idea that down the road, when we get 50 million subscribers paying 30 bucks, we\u2019ll be able to afford all this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It would appear that WrestlePalooza brought short-term hype to gain subscribers for the ESPN Unlimited app. The next question becomes, will those subscribers stay, and how can ESPN use more of the WWE\u2019s premier live events to push for more new subscriptions to the service?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hear T.J. From August 21-September 30, FOX One has generated just 1.1 million subscribers compared to the 2.1 million from ESPN Unlimited.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, FOX One\u2019s biggest day of new sign-ups beat ESPN Unlimited\u2019s. In the data reported from Antenna, the Philadelphia Eagles vs. Kansas City Chiefs matchup on September 14 drove nearly 300,000 new subscribers, compared to ESPN Unlimited\u2019s biggest day on September 20, which brought in just 125,000 subscribers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this month, ESPN and FOX launched a bundle package, which includes both ESPN Unlimited and FOX One.
