Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date\u2019s historical significance to the game. We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for February 2nd featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/turnbia01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ian Turnbull<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Ian Turnbull Scores Five Goals<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1977:<\/strong> The Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman sets a record for most goals by a defender in a single game. Turnbull scores five goals in a 9-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings at Maple Leaf Gardens. He&#8217;s efficient with his shots as he gets all five goals on five shots.<\/p>\n<p>No other defenceman has scored five goals in a game in the 40-plus years since Turnbull set the record. He retires in 1983 with 123 goals and 440 points.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1918:<\/strong> Montreal Canadiens forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/malonjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Malone<\/a> scores five goals as they beat Toronto, 11-2. Malone extends his goal-scoring streak 13 games that started with the league&#8217;s opening night.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1974:<\/strong> Philadelphia Flyers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/clarkbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Clarke<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lonsbro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ross Lonsberry<\/a> each get a hat trick in their 12-2 rout of Detroit. Clarke also gets three assists in the first double hat trick in Flyers history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1980:<\/strong> New York Rangers forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/esposph01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phil Esposito<\/a> scores twice to get to 700 goals in a 6-3 win over the Washington Capitals. Esposito joins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howego01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gordie Howe<\/a> as the league&#8217;s only 700-goal scorers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1989:<\/strong> The Pittsburgh Penguins end their 42-game winless streak at The Spectrum with a 5-3 win in Philadelphia. It&#8217;s the first win for the Penguins at the arena since Jan. 20, 1974 as they went 0-39 with three ties.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1991:<\/strong> Pittsburgh rookie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/jagrja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jaromir Jagr<\/a> gets his <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2021\/01\/03\/today-in-hockey-history-devils-jaromir-jagr-oldest-with-hat-trick\/\" target=\"_self\">first career hat trick<\/a> in 6-2 win over the Boston Bruins. The 19-year-old is the youngest Penguin to get a hat trick in team history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1994:<\/strong> Detroit head coach Scotty Bowman becomes the first bench boss to win 1,000 games in the regular season and the playoffs. Bowman moves to 1,000-578-231 when the Red Wings beat the Tampa Bay Lightning, 3-1.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2011:<\/strong> Red Wings forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/franzjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Johan Franzen<\/a> scores five times in a 7-5 win over the Ottawa Senators. Franzen is the first Detroit player to score five\u00a0 since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fedorse01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sergei Fedorov<\/a> in Dec. 1996. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lainepa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrik Laine<\/a> is the next to get five goals in Nov. 2018.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2012:<\/strong> San Gagner of the Edmonton Oilers is the first player in 23 years to get eight points in a game.
