Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date\u2019s historical significance to the game. We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for February 1st featuring Gary Bettman.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Gary Bettman Takes Office<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1993:<\/strong> Gary Bettman takes over the leadership role as the league&#8217;s first commissioner. He replaced Gil Stein, who served as the league&#8217;s final president. Bettman come over from the National Basketball Association, where he served the league&#8217;s general counsel and senior vice president.<\/p>\n<p>The league has seen expansion and<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2020\/09\/29\/three-cheers-for-gary-bettman\/\" target=\"_self\"> league revenues go up<\/a>, but there&#8217;s also been issues. Bettman has been part of three labour stoppages, including the lost 2004-05 season.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1947:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/rangers\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Rangers<\/a> goalie <span id=\"token-D40EBBDDEF78C75795D82\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/raynech01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chuck Rayner<\/a> tries to take matters into his own hand with his offence struggling. Rayner skates the puck all the way up the ice, but is unsuccessful in a 2-1 loss to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_self\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>1964:<\/strong> Montreal forward <span id=\"token-3B94225530F6B51864783\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/roussbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Rousseau<\/a><\/span> <span id=\"token-5E044C51EE6C6936581AC\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">scores five goals<\/span> in a 9-3 victory against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/redwings\/\" target=\"_self\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a>. It&#8217;s his first career hat trick and the only five-goal game between February 1955 and November 1968.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1970:<\/strong> Rangers goalie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sawchte01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Terry Sawchuk<\/a> gets his final career victory in a 6-0 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/penguins\/\" target=\"_self\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a>. Sawchuk makes 29 saves for his 445th win and 103rd shutout.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1977:<\/strong> The Canadiens <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/laflegu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guy Lafleur<\/a> starts a 28-game point streak with a goal and three assists in a 7-3 win over the Cleveland Barons. The streak lasts through the end of the 1976-77 season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1980:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/oilers\/\" target=\"_self\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a> centre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gretzwa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayne Gretzky<\/a> gets his first NHL hat trick in a 9-2 rout of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/coyotes\/\" target=\"_self\">Winnipeg Jets<\/a>. It&#8217;s the first of a record 50 career hat tricks for Gretzky.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1992:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/islanders\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Islanders<\/a> defenceman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/potvide01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Denis Potvin<\/a> becomes the first from the 80&#8217;s dynasty to have his number retired. The league&#8217;s highest-scoring defenceman has his No. 5 sweater retired.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1997:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/bruins\/\" target=\"_self\">Ray Bourque<\/a> becomes the Boston Bruins all-time leading scorer with a goal in a 3-0 shutout over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/lightning\/\" target=\"_self\">Tampa Bay Lightning<\/a>. Bourque passes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bucykjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Bucyk<\/a> with his 1,340th career point.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2001:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_self\">Colorado Avalanche<\/a> goalie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/roypa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Roy<\/a> becomes the first goalie to play in 40 games in 16 straight seasons.
