However, Thornton immediately left the ice in visible discomfort. He spent a brief period of time on the bench, before quickly heading down the tunnel. He did not return to the game. The injury left Toronto with only 10 forwards for the third period. The Leafs ended up losing the game 3-1 after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/draisle01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leon Draisaitl<\/a> scored his first goal of the season on the powerplay.<\/p>\n<p>Leafs coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/keefesh01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sheldon Keefe<\/a> confirmed fan fears in the immediate aftermath of the game. &#8220;It looks like he&#8217;s [Joe&#8217;s] definitely going to miss some time.&#8221; Today the Maple Leafs announced that an MRI scan revealed that Thornton had fractured a rib. Joe Thornton has tallied one goal and one assist in five games in his first season as a Maple Leaf. He has played most of his minutes on the top line with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/matthau01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Auston Matthews<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/marnemi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mitch Marner<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/HeresYourReplay\/status\/1352074371725209606<\/p>\n<h2>What This Means Going Forward<\/h2>\n<p>Thornton&#8217;s injury adds to the Leafs&#8217; forward depth woes. Earlier this week, Toronto lost rookie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/roberni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nicholas Robertson<\/a> for an estimated four weeks. Robertson <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2021\/01\/17\/toronto-maple-leafs-lose-nicholas-robertson\/\" target=\"_self\">sustained a knee injury<\/a> against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/senators\/\" target=\"_self\">Ottawa Senators<\/a> on Saturday. He was slammed into the boards on a hit from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bathedr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Drake Batherson<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Leafs will most likely call upon right winger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/barabal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexander Barabanov<\/a> to fill the roster void. Barabanov has played two games this season in a limited capacity on the fourth line. Although, this will still leave the Maple Leafs with only 11 forwards in the current roster. Other forward options would have to come from Toronto&#8217;s taxi squad. At present, this includes left-wing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/engvapi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pierre Engvall<\/a> and centreman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/brookad01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam Brooks<\/a>. Engvall played 48 regular-season games last year for the Leafs, scoring 8 goals and 15 points.
