Hockey is finally back! Normally we\u2019d be closing in on the mid-way point of the regular season, however, we\u2019re in a different world. Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date\u2019s historical significance to the game. We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for January 19th Evgeni Nabokov<\/a>.<\/span>

Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n

Evgeni Nabokov Gets Debut Shutout<\/span><\/h3>\n

2000:<\/strong> The San Jose Sharks<\/a> goalie debuts with a 39-save shutout in a scoreless tie with the Colorado Avalanche<\/a>. Patrick Roy<\/a> also posts a shutout, but it’s a little easier with only 15 saves. Roy gets his 47th career shutout in the goalless affair with the Sharks.<\/p>\n

Nabokov<\/span><\/span> finishes his NHL career with 59 shutouts and 353 wins. He plays for the New York Islanders<\/a> and Tampa Bay Lightning<\/a> as well as the Sharks in 14 seasons.<\/p>\n

Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n

1898:<\/strong> Brown University in Providence, R.I. defeats Harvard, 6-0, in the first recorded collegiate hockey game in the United States.<\/p>\n

1971: <\/b>Detroit Red Wings<\/a> forward Gordie Howe<\/a> appears in a record 14th consecutive All-Star Game, eclipsing Maurice Richard<\/a>‘s mark<\/span>. The Western Conference gets a 2-1 win over the East at Boston Garden.<\/p>\n

1991:<\/strong> The Campbell Conference defeat the Wales Conference 11-5 in the NHL All-Star Game at Chicago Stadium. There was some uncertainty on if the game should be played due to the start of Operation Desert Storm. However, NHL President John Ziegler ultimately decides to go ahead.<\/p>\n

1994:<\/strong> New Jersey Devils<\/a> goalie Martin Brodeur<\/a> picks up his second career shutout with a 4-0 win over the Winnipeg Jets<\/a>. He makes 32 saves in the victory for one of his 125 career shutouts<\/a>.<\/p>\n

1996:<\/strong> The NHL Board of Governors approves the sale of the original Jets to a group in Arizona. They become the Phoenix Coyotes<\/a> in 1996-97, but the Winnipeg Jets<\/a> return in 2011.<\/p>\n

2004:<\/strong> Colorado forward Milan Hejduk<\/a> becomes the third player to score on an overtime penalty shot. He beats Lightning goalie Nikolai Khabibulin<\/a> 59 seconds into overtime for a 5-4 win. Hejduk scores on his second penalty shot in eight days.<\/span><\/p>\n

2006:<\/b> Luc Robitaille<\/a><\/span> passes Marcel Dionne<\/a><\/span> for the most goals in Los Angeles Kings<\/a> history with a hat trick against the Atlanta Thrashers<\/a>. His three goals give him 551 and help secure an 8-6 victory.<\/p>\n

2019:<\/strong> New York Rangers<\/a> goalie Henrik Lundqvist<\/a> passes Terry Sawchuk<\/a> for his 446th career win in net. Lundqvist makes 27 saves in a 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins<\/a>.<\/p>\n
