Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date\u2019s historical significance to the game. We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for January 14th, featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/q\/quennjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joel Quenneville<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Joel Quenneville Moves to Second on Win List<\/h3>\n<p><strong>2016:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_self\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a> coach passes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/arboual01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Al Arbour<\/a> for second on the all-time coaching wins list. Chicago gets a 2-1 victory over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_self\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> to get the milestone. <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Quenneville<\/span> competed against Arbour&#8217;s teams during the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/islanders\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Islanders<\/a> four straight Stanley Cups form 1980-83.<\/p>\n<p>The Blackhawks bench boss leads his team to three Stanley Cups from 2009-2015. However, he is fired on Nov. 8, 2018 after a 6-6-3 start. The Florida Panthers <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2019\/04\/08\/joel-quenneville-hired-by-florida-panthers\/\" target=\"_self\">hire him in April 2019<\/a> and he&#8217;s their current coach.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1922:<\/strong> <span id=\"token-1C0EDCF2DA42AC735768C\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/cleghsp01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sprague Cleghorn<\/a><\/span> and brother <span id=\"token-DB39F9A1C24B9B5D0F996\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/cleghod01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Odie Cleghorn<\/a><\/span> <span id=\"token-7DCB03303E015FE06EB9A\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">each score four goals<\/span> in the Montreal&#8217;s 10-6 win against the visiting Hamilton Tigers. It&#8217;s the first time brothers have scored four times each in a game.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1936:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/rangers\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Rangers<\/a> coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/patrile01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lester Patrick<\/a> wins his 200th game as a coach in a 2-1 victory over the Montreal Maroons. Patrick has been the Rangers&#8217; coach since the team&#8217;s inception in 1926.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1943:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/smartal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Smart<\/a> is the first player to get a hat trick in his debut in the Habs 5-1 win over the Black Hawks. Smart plays eight games and scores five goals before returning to senior hockey.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1962:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/redwings\/\" target=\"_self\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> goalie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sawchte01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Terry Sawchuk<\/a> becomes the first goalie to win 300 games with the club. He helps the Red Wings top the Rangers, 2-1.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1971:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/bruins\/\" target=\"_self\">Boston Bruins<\/a> forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/esposph01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phil Esposito<\/a> gets his fifth hat trick of the season to set a record at the time. Esposito also has three assists in a 9-5 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/kings\/\" target=\"_self\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1984:<\/strong> Islanders&#8217; forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bossymi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Bossy<\/a> scores his 400th goal in a 4-2 win over the Rangers. He becomes the fastest to the mark before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gretzwa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayne Gretzky<\/a> breaks it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1988:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/potvide01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Denis Potvin<\/a> becomes the first defenceman to score 300 career goals in the Isles&#8217; 8-5 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_self\">Quebec Nordiques.<\/a> Potvin scores on the power play and retires with 310 at the end of the season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2006:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/pominja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jason Pominville<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hechtjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jochen Hecht<\/a> each score three goals in the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/sabres\/\" target=\"_self\">Buffalo Sabres<\/a> 10-1 rout of the Kings.
