Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for January 11th, featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/ovechal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Ovechkin<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Alex Ovechkin Gets 1,000th Point<\/h3>\n<p>2017: The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/capitals\/\" target=\"_self\">Washington Capitals<\/a> winger becomes the 84th player to get to <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2017\/12\/27\/appreciating-greatness-ageless-wonder-alex-ovechkin\/\" target=\"_self\">1,000 career points<\/a>. He gets the milestone point just 35 seconds into the Capitals&#8217; 5-2 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/penguins\/\" target=\"_self\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a>. Ovechkin wastes little time getting point No. 1,001 with a power-play tally 8:06 into the second period.<\/p>\n<p>The Moscow native comes into the 2020-21 season with 706 goals and 1,278 points. He is currently in eighth on the all-time list and just just two behind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gartnmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Gartner<\/a> and trails <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/esposph01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phil Esposito<\/a> by 11.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1941:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/leafs\/\" target=\"_self\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> rout the New York Americans, 9-0, in a penalty-free game. It&#8217;s the second straight game without a penalty for the Maple Leafs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1948:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_self\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/blaketo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toe Blake<\/a> breaks his ankle when he crashes into the boards in a 3-1 loss to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/rangers\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Rangers<\/a>. Blake&#8217;s playing career ends, but he goes on to be one of the best coaches in league history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1953:<\/strong> Montreal native and Rangers goalie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/worslgu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gump Worsley<\/a> gets his first NHL shutout with a 7-0 win over the Habs. Worsley fills in for the injured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/raynech01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chuck Rayner<\/a> and gets two goals from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/stoddja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jack Stoddard<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1976:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/flyers\/\" target=\"_self\"> Philadelphia Flyers<\/a> are the first NHL team to defeat the Soviet Red Army with a 4-1 win. <span id=\"token-CC097AD99CB65D24B3991\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/leachre01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reggie Leach<\/a><\/span>, <span id=\"token-4DD555E396C8BCF622B84\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/macleri01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rick MacLeish<\/a><\/span>, <span id=\"token-583BB4471DD017D0DEC92\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/watsojo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Watson<\/a><\/span> and <span id=\"token-506BC4C169C86535DF984\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/goodela01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Larry Goodenough<\/a> each score to down the Soviets. Vladislav Tretiak makes 49 saves to keep his team in the game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>1983:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hughepa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pat Hughes<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/oilers\/\" target=\"_self\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a> scores two shorthanded goals in 25 seconds to set a new record. Hughes is the first player to break a record set by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gretzwa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayne Gretzky<\/a> in a 7-5 win over the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/blues\/\" target=\"_self\"> St. Louis Blues<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1986:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/kings\/\" target=\"_self\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a> great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dionnma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcel Dionne<\/a> scores twice in a 4-4 tie with the Blues. Dionne becomes the first player to get 20 goals in his first 15 seasons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1990:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/islanders\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Islanders<\/a> centre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lafonpa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pat LaFontaine<\/a> extends his goal-scoring streak to 11 games in an 8-4 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/stars\/\" target=\"_self\">Minnesota North Stars<\/a>. LaFontaine also hands out five assists as he surpasses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bossymi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Bossy<\/a>&#8216;s team record.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2000:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_self\">Carolina Hurricanes<\/a> forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/roberga01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gary Roberts<\/a> becomes the sixth player to get 300 goals and 2,000 penalty minutes.
