The injuries were so severe that he took pain injections\u00a0for it.\u00a0Ovechkin will not need surgery for the injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Not only did the injuries affect his play during the playoffs, but they&#8217;re also keeping him out of the IIHF World Championship. The Russian Hockey Federation confirmed this. It also implied that even ending out the playoffs was a challenge.<\/p>\n<h2>Alexander Ovechkin Played Through Lower-Body Injury in Playoffs<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s not guaranteed, but Ovechkin says he suffered the knee injury after a low hit from Nazem Kadri in the first round; against the Toronto Maple Leafs. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kadrina01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nazem Kadri<\/a><\/strong> hip checked Ovechkin as the Capitals broke out of their zone. Kadri&#8217;s hip and left knee hit Ovechkin&#8217;s left knee square on. Ovechkin went flying over Kadri, and the Maple Leafs forward was handed a two minute penalty for tripping.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ovechkin needs help leaving the ice after low Kadri hit\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-niswxxUip8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Ovechkin indicated that he hurt his hamstring druing the Capitals second round series against the Pittsburgh Penguins. \u00a0However, it is unclear exactly when the injury occured. The Capitals <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2017\/05\/12\/washington-capitals-vs-pittsburgh-penguins-second-round-series-recap\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lost to the Penguins in seven games<\/a>. \u00a0At the beginning of Game 5, head coach <strong>Barry Trotz<\/strong>\u00a0moved Ovechkin from the first line to the third line. This may have been an attempt to reduce his star winger&#8217;s minutes, while still getting some time at even strength and on the power play.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, Ovechkin had five goals and eight points in 13 games during these playoffs.
