Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for January 7th, featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/binnijo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jordan Binnington<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Jordan Binnington Starts for Blues<\/h3>\n<p><strong>2019:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/blues\/\" target=\"_self\">St. Louis Blues<\/a> give the start to the young rookie in a 3-0 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/flyers\/\" target=\"_self\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a>. Binnington stops all 25 shots to get his first NHL shutout, which starts a revival for the team.<\/p>\n<p>The Blues were in last place at the start of the new year, but they turned it around <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2020\/06\/12\/today-in-hockey-history-2018-19-blues-win-cup\/\" target=\"_self\">won their first Stanley Cup.<\/a> St. Louis beat the Boston Bruins in seven games to cap the turnaround.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1928:<\/strong> Montreal Canadiens forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/morenho01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Howie Morenz<\/a> gets a hat trick in a 9-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Morenz gets to 100 goals on his first tally as the Habs allow two or fewer goals for their 20th straight game.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1968:<\/strong> Chicago Black Hawks forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hullbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Hull<\/a> is the first player in team history to get 400 goals. He reaches the milestone in a 4-2 win over Boston.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1976:<\/strong> The New York Rangers hire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fergujo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Ferguson<\/a> as head coach and general manager. Ferguson is selected for both jobs after coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/stewaro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ron Stewart<\/a> and GM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/francem01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emile Francis<\/a> are dismissed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1980:<\/strong> The Flyers see their record 35-game unbeaten streak end in a 7-1 loss to the Minnesota North Stars. Philadelphia had gone 25-0 with 10 ties to eclipse Montreal&#8217;s 28-game run in 1977-78.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1981:<\/strong> Los Angeles Kings forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dionnma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcel Dionne<\/a> scores twice to become the 14th player to get 1,000 career points. Dionne helps L.A. beat the Hartford Whalers, 7-4, to get the mark in his 740th career game. That is the fastest any player gets to the milestone, but has been passed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1984:<\/strong> Edmonton Oilers centre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gretzwa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayne Gretzky<\/a> scores three times in a 5-3 victory over Hartford. Gretzky becomes the first player to get 50 goals in five straight seasons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1987:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/secoral01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Al Secord<\/a> scores four goals in 8:24 in Chicago&#8217;s 6-4 win over Toronto. Rookie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lavarma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark LaVarre<\/a> gets four assists for the Blackhawks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1999:<\/strong> The Kings <span id=\"token-A73C14AF36628D1F4C6B8\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/robitlu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luc Robitaille<\/a> scores twice as to become the 27th player to get to 500 goals. His goals power the Kings to a 4-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2004:<\/strong> Phoenix Coyotes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bouchbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brian Boucher<\/a> is the first goalie in 55 years to get four straight shutouts.
