Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date\u2019s historical significance to the game. We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for January 4th, featuring the infamous Punch-Up in Piestany.

Today in Hockey History<\/h3>\n

Canada, USSR Have Punch-Up in Piestany at 1987 World Juniors<\/h4>\n

1987:<\/strong> Tensions boil over between the Canadian and Soviet squads in a massive brawl that involved most members of both teams. Everything came to a head when Pavel Kostichkin took a two-handed slash at Theo Fleury. The benches cleared and officials could not separate the teams.<\/p>\n

Officials tried shutting off the lights, but it didn’t stop the fighting. Both teams were disqualified from the tournament. Canada was trying to play for the gold and needed a five-goal win to get the top prize. Finland was awarded the gold, host Czechoslovakia got silver and Sweden took bronze.<\/p>\n

Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n

1942:<\/strong> The Detroit Red Wings<\/a> rout the Montreal Canadiens<\/a>, 10-0, in Detroit. It’s the first time that the Habs have allowed 10 goals in a game.<\/p>\n

1973:<\/strong> Boston Bruins<\/a> defenceman Bobby Orr<\/a> scores his 163rd goal to break Red Kelly<\/a>‘s record for goals by a blueliner. The Bruins still fall to the St. Louis Blues<\/a>, 4-2.<\/p>\n

1984:<\/strong> Edmonton Oilers<\/a> Wayne Gretzky<\/a> gets eight points<\/a> for the second time in his career. He gets four goals and four assists in a 12-8 win over the Minnesota North Stars<\/a>.<\/p>\n

1988:<\/b> Borje Salming<\/a><\/span> of the Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> is the first European trained player to appear in 1,000 NHL games. He gets two assists in a 7-7 tie with the Vancouver Canucks<\/a> as he’s the fifth player to get 1,000 games for Toronto.<\/p>\n

1989:<\/strong> Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> star Mario Lemieux<\/a> gets two assists to extend his point streak to 29 games. His two assists power Pittsburgh to a 4-3 win over Vancouver.<\/p>\n

1992:<\/strong> New York Rangers<\/a> winger Mike Gartner<\/a> gets a goal and an assist to reach 1,000 points. However, the Rangers suffer a 6-4 loss to the New Jersey Devils<\/a>.<\/p>\n

2016:<\/strong> Colorado Avalanche<\/a> forward Jarome Iginla<\/a> gets his 600th career goal in a 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings<\/a>.<\/p>\n

2017:<\/strong> The United States rallies to beat Russia, 4-3, in a shootout at the World Juniors in Montreal. Troy Terry<\/a> scores three times in the shootout to set up a showdown with the rival Canadians. Julien Gauthier<\/a> scores twice as Canada beats Sweden, 5-2, in the other semifinal.<\/p>\n
