Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for December 31st, featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lemiema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mario Lemieux<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We hope that you have a safe and happy New Year&#8217;s Eve.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Mario Lemieux Scores Every Way<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1988:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/penguins\/\" target=\"_self\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> centre scores in each way possible in an 8-6 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/devils\/\" target=\"_self\">New Jersey Devils<\/a>. Lemieux scores even strength, power play, shorthanded penalty shot and empty net goals for Pittsburgh. It&#8217;s the equivalent of hitting for the cycle in baseball.<\/p>\n<p>He also adds three assists to key the Penguins to the victory over their Patrick Division rivals. Lemieux recorded <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2020\/10\/11\/today-in-hockey-history-mario-lemieux-scores-on-first-pittsburgh-penguins-shift\/\" target=\"_self\">his first career hat trick<\/a> three years earlier in an 8-4 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/blues\/\" target=\"_self\">St. Louis Blues<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1975:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_self\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> and Soviet Red Army play in arguably the greatest game ever played. Montreal and the Soviets play to a 3-3 tie at the Montreal Forum. Goals by <span id=\"token-5336FB0B12051BF623684\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/shuttst01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steve Shutt<\/a><\/span> and <span id=\"token-F292D667DEAC366FE6F9B\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lambeyv01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yvon Lambert<\/a><\/span> give the Habs a 2-0 lead and <span id=\"token-F11AF7D935A8848CFDC9A\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/cournyv01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yvan Cournoyer<\/a><\/span> makes it 3-1 in the second period. However, Valeri Kharlamov and Boris Alexandrov tie the game and Vladislav Tretiak withstands a 16-shot barrage by the Canadiens in the third to earn the tie.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1990:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_self\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a> goalie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/belfoed01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ed Belfour<\/a> stops 22 shots in a 4-0 win over the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/redwings\/\" target=\"_self\"> Detroit Red Wings<\/a>. It&#8217;s the first road shutout for Chicago in six years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1992:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/islanders\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Islanders<\/a> coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/arboual01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Al Arbour<\/a> becomes the losingest coach in NHL history in a 5-1 loss to the Blues. He passed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/i\/irvindi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dick Irvin<\/a>, but had a mark of 721-522-233 after that game. He finished his career with a 782-577-248 record, the second most NHL wins in history behind Scotty Bowman (1,244).<\/p>\n<p><strong>1997:<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/sabres\/\" target=\"_self\"> Buffalo Sabres<\/a> goalie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hasekdo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dominik Hasek<\/a> rounds of December with his sixth shutout of the month. He stops 36 shots in a 3-0 victory over the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/senators\/\" target=\"_self\"> Ottawa Senators<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hainsge01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">George Hainsworth<\/a> was the last goalie to get six shutouts in a month in one month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2017:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/vegas-golden-knights\/\" target=\"_self\">Vegas Golden Knights<\/a> forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/karlswi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">William Karlsson<\/a> gets the first hat trick in franchise history. He scores three and gets an assist in a 6-3 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/leafs\/\" target=\"_self\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> as the Knights go 11-1-1 for the month.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/flames\/\" target=\"_self\">Calgary Flames<\/a> winger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/jagrja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jaromir Jagr<\/a> plays his last NHL game at this time in a 4-3 win over Chicago.
