Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for December 30th, featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gretzwa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayne Gretzky<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Wayne Gretzky Nets 50 Goals in 39 Games<\/h3>\n<p>1981: The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/oilers\/\" target=\"_self\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a> centre shatters the mark for\u00a0 quickest to 50 goals with a five-goal outburst. Gretzky powers Edmonton to a 7-5 victory over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/flyers\/\" target=\"_self\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a> of 50 goals in 50 games. Both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/richama01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maurice Richard<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bossymi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Bossy<\/a> held the mark that Gretzky destroys.<\/p>\n<p>Gretzky had scored four goals in the previous game just three nights before against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/kings\/\" target=\"_self\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a>. He goes on to score <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2020\/10\/26\/today-in-hockey-history-kings-wayne-gretzky-gets-2000-points\/\" target=\"_self\">92 goals for the season<\/a>, which is still a single-season record.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1904:<\/strong> The red line is created in the first game of a best-of-three Challenge Cup matchup between Ottawa HC and Winnipeg Rowing club. Officials create the line to help award goals and the line has been since expanded to the boards.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1934;<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/rangers\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Rangers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/bruins\/\" target=\"_self\">Boston Bruins<\/a> to a scoreless tie to start the Bruins&#8217; 37-game unbeaten streak in overtime. The streak spans four years, but Boston ties in 27 of these games.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1967:<\/strong> The Kings christen the Great Western Forum in Inglewood with a 2-0 loss to the Flyers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/faveldo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Doug Favell<\/a> makes 25 saves to earn the shutout for Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1978:<\/strong> Hall of Fame official Frank Udvari becomes the oldest man to referee an NHL game at 55 years old. He&#8217;s pressed into service after Dave Newell leaves with a bad cut. Udvari disallows a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/trottbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bryan Trottier<\/a> goal despite borrowing a pair of skates from him. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/islanders\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Islanders<\/a> beat the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/flames\/\" target=\"_self\"> Atlanta Flames<\/a>, 4-2.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1989:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/leafs\/\" target=\"_self\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> score six unanswered goals to complete a 7-6 overtime win over Boston. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/clarkwe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wendel Clark<\/a> scores at 3:19 of overtime to seal the rally from 6-1 down.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1992:<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/capitals\/\" target=\"_self\"> Washington Capitals<\/a> defenceman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/i\/iafraal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Al Iafrate<\/a> records the first shot to top 100 miles per hour. He recorded a shot of 101.4 mph at the Capitals Superskills competition.<\/p>\n<p>Sweden&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/forsbpe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Peter Forsberg<\/a> sets a World Juniors record with 10 points in a 20-1 rout of Japan. Forsberg would finish the tournament with 31 points as the Swedes won silver.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2006:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/devils\/\" target=\"_self\">New Jersey Devils<\/a> goalie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/brodema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Martin Brodeur<\/a> sets the record for most shutouts with one team in a 2-0 win over the Islanders.
