We all know the exploits of the great playoff performers. However, we hardly hear about the unlikely playoff heroes. These unlikely post-season stars can contribute in many ways. Contributions could be for an entire playoff run, a series, a game or even a goal. These unlikely heroes have made big plays that no one expects. This series looks at all of these unknown stars. These are the unlikely <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/senators\/\" target=\"_self\">Ottawa Senators<\/a> playoff heroes.<\/p>\n<h2>Ottawa Senators Playoff Heroes<\/h2>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jean-Gabriel Pageau<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Before the Moment\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Ottawa Senators were playing a second-round series against the<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2020\/02\/24\/new-york-islanders-sign-jean-gabriel-pageau-to-extension\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0New York Rangers<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0in 2017. The Senators had home-ice advantage, and they won their first game of the series at home. Game 2 wasn&#8217;t going as well. The Rangers were up 5-3 late in the third period. It appeared they were going to tie the series. The Senators&#8217; third-line centre\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/pageaje01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jean-Gabriel Pageau<\/a><\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0scored Ottawa&#8217;s first of the game. However, Pageau&#8217;s night was just getting started.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Moment<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">With 3:23 left in the third period, Senators&#8217; forward <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/smithza01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zack Smith<\/a><\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> fired a harmless wrist shot from the blue line. Pageau skated towards the net and deflected the shot in to cut New York&#8217;s lead to one. Pageau was back on the ice two minutes later while the Senators had their goalie pulled. <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/turriky01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle Turris<\/a><\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0shot the puck from the point with a minute left, and Pageau scored another deflection goal to tie the game. This was Pageau&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Kg9B4xG8NK8\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">second career playoff hat trick<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. He scored one as a rookie four-years prior against the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Montreal Canadiens<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Three minutes into double overtime, Pageau burst down on a two-on-one with\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/wingeto01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tommy Wingels<\/a><\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Pageau ripped a wrist shot top-corner to win the game and put the Senators up 2-0 in the series.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Aftermath<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Senators moved on to defeat the Rangers to make it to the Eastern Conference Finals but lost to the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Pittsburgh Penguin<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">s in seven games. Jean-Gabriel Pageau remained for the Senators for two and a half more years. During that time, the Senators went into a rebuild. Last season, he moved up to being Ottawa&#8217;s top centre, and took advantage of his increased role and scored 40 points in 60 games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Senators\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2020\/02\/24\/jean-gabriel-pageau-shipped-out-ottawa-senators\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">traded<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Pageau to the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/islanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">New York Islanders<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0at the trade deadline, where Pageau enjoyed another long playoff run. The Islanders made it to the Conference Finals but lost to the eventual Stanley Cup Champion,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/lightning\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tampa Bay Lightning<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Pageau had 11 points in 22 playoff games. He will remain with the Islanders because he <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2020\/02\/24\/new-york-islanders-sign-jean-gabriel-pageau-to-extension\/\" target=\"_self\">signed<\/a> a six-year contract worth $5 million a season with them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Clarke MacArthur<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Before the Moment<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The second Ottawa Senators playoff hero takes place during the same 2017 playoff run. However, this story starts a few years earlier. On October 14, 2015, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/macarcl01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clarke MacArthur<\/a><\/strong> slipped and hit the side of his head on the ice. He suffered his third concussion in eight months, and he didn&#8217;t play for the rest of the season. In training camp to start the 2016-17 season, MacArthur got\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2016\/09\/25\/senators-clarke-macarthur-suffers-concussion-practice\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">hit in a scrimmage<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0by\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sielopa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Sieloff<\/a><\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and suffered yet another concussion. In January 2017, he didn&#8217;t pass the NHL&#8217;s baseline concussion test and was <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2017\/01\/20\/clarke-macarthur-ottawa-senators-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">announced<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0he wouldn&#8217;t play that season. MacArthur\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/ottawacitizen.com\/sports\/hockey\/nhl\/senatorsextra\/exclusive-fire-to-play-still-burning-in-senators-clarke-macarthur\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">contemplated<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> retirement. However, he kept working out, and by April 4th, he was cleared to play and played in Ottawa&#8217;s last four games of the regular season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ottawa played in the playoffs against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/bruins\/\" target=\"_self\">Boston Bruins<\/a>, and MacArthur scored his first goal in two years in Game 2.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Moment<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">By Game 6, Ottawa was up 3-2 in their series against Boston. The game went into overtime. In the overtime,\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/pastrda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Pastrnak<\/a><\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0hauled down MacArthur, giving the Senators a power play. On the man advantage, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/ryanbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Ryan<\/a><\/strong> had the puck at the side of the net. He quickly passed the puck to MacArthur in the slot, who shot and scored the series-winning goal.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">After the Moment<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Senators marched on in the playoffs. They defeated the New York Rangers in the second round. That is where the Senators needed Pageau&#8217;s heroics. They faced the Pittsburgh Penguins in the third round and advanced as far as possible without winning the series. They lost in Game 7 in double overtime. MacArthur finished the playoffs scoring three goals, six assists for nine points in 19 games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sadly, that was the end of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/macarcl01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clarke MacArthur<\/a>&#8216;s career. He<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2017\/09\/14\/ottawa-senators-forward-clarke-macarthur-fails-physical\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0failed his medical test<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0at training camp the following season and never played another game. In June of 2019, MacArthur the Senators<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/hockey\/nhl\/clarke-macarthur-jesse-winchester-return-senators-development-roles\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0hired<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0MacArthur as a member of their developmental staff.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jason Spezza<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Before the Moment<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ottawa was enjoying their best season in the team&#8217;s 10-year history in 2002-03. With 52 wins and 113 points, the Senators captured the franchise&#8217;s only President&#8217;s Trophy as the best team in the regular season. They carried that momentum into the playoffs and made it to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in franchise history, taking on the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/devils\/\" target=\"_self\">New Jersey Devils<\/a>. The Senators won the first game of the series but then lost three straight, falling 3-1. The Senators only scored three goals in the three games they lost to New Jersey and needed some offence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Moment<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Senators inserted 19-year-old rookie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/spezzja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jason Spezza<\/a><\/strong> into the line-up in Game 5. Spezza was a highly touted young player. He was drafted second overall by Ottawa in 2001 and scored 21 points in 33 games that season. However, Spezza didn&#8217;t play up until that point in the playoffs. The do or die Game 5 was Spezza&#8217;s first NHL playoff game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Senators and Devils traded goals in the first period. The second period was scoreless, setting up a pivotal third period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The crowd was excited to see what Spezza could do. According to the book<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Ottawa Senators<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">:\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Great Stories from The NHL&#8217;s First Dynasty,\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">written by Chris Robinson, the crowd cheered every time Spezza touched the puck. He didn&#8217;t disappoint them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Eight minutes into the third period, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/havlama01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Martin Havlat<\/a> jammed the puck past\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/brodema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Martin Brodeur<\/a><\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0to give the Senators the lead. Spezza got an assist on the goal and his first playoff point. Five minutes later, he tipped a shot from\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/phillch02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Phillips<\/a><\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0past Brodeur to put the Senators up 3-1 with 7:32 left in the period. The Senators hung on to their lead and stayed alive.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">After the Moment<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Senators played Game 6 in New Jersey, and another unlikely Ottawa Senators playoff hero emerged. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/phillch02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Phillips<\/a> scored the overtime goal to force a Game 7. Phillips was a top-four defensive defenceman but only scored three goals that season. The series completed a hat trick of unlikely heroes in Game 7. Unfortunately, for Ottawa, it was a Devil this time. <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/friesje01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeff Friesen<\/a><\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0scored the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2020\/12\/26\/unlikely-new-jersey-devils-playoff-heroes\/\" target=\"_self\">series-winning goal<\/a> with under three minutes left in the third period to end Ottawa&#8217;s season. The Devils moved on to win the Stanley Cup.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Spezza became one of the greatest players in Senators&#8217; history. Four years later, in 2007, he scored 22 points in 20 playoff games, and the Senators went to their only Stanley Cup Final that year but lost to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/ducks\/\" target=\"_self\">Anaheim Ducks<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In 2013 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/alfreda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daniel Alfredsson<\/a><\/strong> left the Senators, and Spezza became the captain. However, that lasted one season, and Spezza was traded to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/stars\/\" target=\"_self\">Dallas Stars<\/a>. He played the sixth-most games in franchise history (686) and scored the second-most points (687).
