Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date\u2019s historical significance to the game. We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for December 26th, featuring Sergei Fedorov<\/a>.

Today in Hockey History<\/h3>\n

Sergei Fedorov Nets Five Goals<\/h3>\n

1996: The Detroit Red Wings<\/a> forward scores all five of the team’s goals in a 5-4 overtime win over the Washington Capitals.<\/a> Fedorov takes a pass for fellow countryman Vladimir Konstantinov<\/a> to seal the win for his team. The Russian becomes the first player in league history to score all of his team’s goals of at least five or more.<\/p>\n

He finishes his career with 483 career goals and 1,179 NHL points. Fedorov enters the Hall of Fame in 2015.<\/p>\n

Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n

1923:<\/strong> Montreal Canadiens<\/a> great Howie Morenz<\/a> scores his first NHL goal<\/a> in 3-2 loss to the Ottawa Senators<\/a>. Morenz ends up tallying 271 goals in 550 career games and is one of the first entrants to the Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n

1925:<\/strong> The New York Americans and Pittsburgh Pirates set an NHL record by recording a combined 141 shots on net. New York wins the game, 3-1, as Roy Worters<\/a> made 70 saves for Pittsburgh and Jake Forbes<\/a> had 67 for New York.<\/p>\n

1976:<\/strong> Boston Bruins<\/a> left winger John Bucyk<\/a> passes Maurice Richard<\/a> on the all-time scoring list. Bucyk scores his 545th goal in 6-3 victory over the Cleveland Barons.<\/p>\n

1989:<\/strong> Montreal great Doug Harvey<\/a> passed away due to cirrhosis of the liver. He was one of the best defencemen in league history.<\/p>\n

1991:<\/strong> The New York Rangers<\/a> rally from a 6-1 deficit to beat Washington, 8-6, which scored six first-period goals. New York records a five-goal third period and Mike Gartner<\/a> gets the game-winner. Sergei Nemchinov<\/a> caps the furious rally with an empty-net goal.<\/p>\n

Joe Mullen<\/a> has his second straight four-goal game in the Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> 12-1 rout of the Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a>. Mario Lemieux<\/a> gets seven points while Kevin Stevens<\/a> bags six points.<\/p>\n

1993:<\/strong> Gartner scores his milestone 600th career goal in the Rangers 8-3 win over the New Jersey Devils<\/a>. He scores No. 601 just 67 seconds later against Chris Terreri<\/a>.<\/p>\n

2001:<\/strong> Colorado Avalanche<\/a> goalie Patrick Roy<\/a> is the first goalie to win 500 games in a 2-0 shutout of the Dallas Stars<\/a>. He makes 31 saves to get his 59th career shutout.<\/p>\n
