{"id":9501,"date":"2017-05-06T02:24:44","date_gmt":"2017-05-06T06:24:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/?p=9501"},"modified":"2017-05-06T02:24:44","modified_gmt":"2017-05-06T06:24:44","slug":"scott-darling-signs-four-year-deal-carolina-hurricanes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2017\/05\/06\/scott-darling-signs-four-year-deal-carolina-hurricanes\/","title":{"rendered":"Scott Darling Signs Four-Year Deal With The Carolina Hurricanes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After being acquired by the <a href=\"http:\/\/nhl.com\/hurricanes\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carolina Hurricanes<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2017\/04\/28\/carolina-hurricanes-acquire-goaltender-scott-darling\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on April 29th<\/a>,\u00a0goaltender <strong><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/darlisc01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scott  Darling<\/a><\/strong> has signed a four-year $16.6 million contract with the Canes. He has an average\u00a0cap hit of $4.15 million.<\/p>\n<p>The pending UFA had a 2.37 goals against average and a .923 save percentage in 75 games with the <a href=\"http:\/\/nhl.com\/blackhawks\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a>.\u00a0His save percentage ranked tied for fourth among all NHL goaltenders who started over 25 games.\u00a0Scott  Darling had a\u00a039-17-9 record with the Blackhawks.<\/p>\n<p>Carolina has had quite the goalie conundrum over the past few seasons.\u00a0The Hurricanes were 18th in the NHL in goals-against average (2.80) but they were 27th in team save percentage at .901.<\/p>\n<h2>Scott  Darling Signs Four-Year Deal With The Carolina Hurricanes<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Darling makes outstanding pad save on Ellis\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UXrCMIoXQlw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>However, the Hurricanes now have three goalies under contract. Veteran number one <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/wardca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cam  Ward<\/a>, who has a $3.30 million cap hit, and <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lacked01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eddie  Lack<\/a> who has a $2.75 million cap hit in 2017-18. Both goalies will be eligible to be selected in the upcoming expansion draft.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricanes general manager <strong><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/francro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ron  Francis<\/a><\/strong> said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/hurricanes\/news\/hurricanes-scott-darling-agree-to-four-year-contract\/c-289294812\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a>, &#8220;Obviously Scott could have waited until July 1, to see what other options he might have as an unrestricted free agent, but he believes in what we are trying to do here and we are thrilled that he is committing to the Hurricanes and Raleigh.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, it has been <a href=\"http:\/\/ingoalmag.com\/features\/masterton-nominee-darling-making-most-of-second-chance\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">quite the journey<\/a> to the NHL for Scott  Darling. Before making his NHL debut, he played games at nearly every North American professional level, including the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL), ECHL, Central Hockey League (CHL) and American Hockey League (AHL).<\/p>\n<p>Still, the Carolina Hurricanes finished 21st in the NHL this season, with a -21 goal differential.
