Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date\u2019s historical significance to the game. We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for December 10th, featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bowerjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Johnny Bower<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Johnny Bower Plays Final Game<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1969:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/leafs\/\" target=\"_self\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> goalie plays his final game of the his career at 45 years old. It&#8217;s the only start of the 1969-70 for Bower in a 6-3 loss to the rival <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_self\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> at the Montreal Forum.<\/p>\n<p>He finishes with an NHL record of 250-192 with 90 ties. This includes a 219-157-71 mark with the Maple Leafs and he enters the Hall of Fame in 1975. Bower was successful as a top goalie in the league despite having poor eyesight.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1931:<\/strong> Montreal goalie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hainsge01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">George Hainsworth<\/a> passes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/conneal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alec Connell<\/a> as the league&#8217;s all-time shutout leaders. Hainsworth gets his 64th shutout in a 3-0 win over the New York Americans on his way to 94 for his career. <span id=\"token-86E0FBFBF59B3C9B7D6A2\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lepinpi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pit Lepine<\/a><\/span> scores all three Canadiens&#8217; goals for his fourth NHL hat trick.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1970:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/bruins\/\" target=\"_self\">Boston Bruins<\/a> pepper <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/sabres\/\" target=\"_self\">Buffalo Sabres<\/a> goalie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/daleyjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Daley<\/a> with 72 shots in an 8-2 win. Johnny Bucyk gets two goals and four assists for the Bruins as they score six in the third period.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1986:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/oilers\/\" target=\"_self\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a> great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gretzwa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayne Gretzky<\/a> gets his 40th career hat trick in a 7-4 win at the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/coyotes\/\" target=\"_self\">Winnipeg Jets<\/a>. Gretzky gets 1,900 points exactly three years later in the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/kings\/\" target=\"_self\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a> 8-4 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_self\">Quebec Nordiques<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1992:<\/strong> The NHL grants expansion teams to Miami and Anaheim to start play in 1993-94. The NHL moves up to 26 teams with the addition of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/panthers\/\" target=\"_self\">Florida Panthers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/ducks\/\" target=\"_self\">Mighty Ducks of Anaheim<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Nordiques forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sundima01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mats Sundin<\/a> extends his team-best point-streak to 30 games in a 5-4 win over the Kings. Sundin gets 21 goals and 46 points <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2020\/04\/06\/today-in-hockey-history-toronto-maple-leafs-mats-sundin-becomes-top-swede\/\" target=\"_self\">during the run<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1997:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/coyotes\/\" target=\"_self\">Phoenix Coyotes<\/a> defenceman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/petitmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michel Petit<\/a> becomes the first player to get a point with 10 different teams.
