Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date\u2019s historical significance to the game. We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for November 29th, featuring the first game at the Montreal Forum.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Montreal Forum Opens<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1924:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_self\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> open the vaunted arena with a 7-1 over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/leafs\/\" target=\"_self\">Toronto St. Patricks<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bouchbi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Billy Boucher<\/a> scores a hat trick, including a goal in the first 55 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>The Habs ironically don&#8217;t play in the building except when they take on the rival Montreal Maroons. Les Habitants don&#8217;t move into the building full-time until 1926. Both clubs share the building until the Maroons cease operations in 1938. The Canadiens play at the Forum until March 1996.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1967:<\/strong> Scotty Bowman coaches the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/leafs\/\" target=\"_self\">St. Louis Blues<\/a> to a 3-2 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/kings\/\" target=\"_self\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2020\/11\/24\/today-in-hockey-history-red-wings-scotty-bowman-coaches-2000th-game\/\" target=\"_self\">win is Bowman&#8217;s first<\/a> behind the bench and stops a seven-game losing streak.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1968:<\/strong> Rookie goalie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/esposto01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tony Esposito<\/a> makes his debut in Montreal&#8217;s 5-4 loss to the Oakland Seals after coming in for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/v\/vachoro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rogie Vachon<\/a>. Esposito is claimed by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1969 intraleague draft and goes on to become the winningest goalie in their history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1975:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/bruins\/\" target=\"_self\">Boston Bruins<\/a> defenceman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/orrbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Orr<\/a> has his fifth knee surgery and doesn&#8217;t return until Oct. 1976. He signs with Chicago in the off-season, but is limited by those same knee issues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1986:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/flyers\/\" target=\"_self\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a> goalie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hextaro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ron Hextall<\/a> is the first goalie in team history to get two assists in one game. He hands out a pair of helpers in a 6-5 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/islanders\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Islanders.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>2003:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/redwings\/\" target=\"_self\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> defenceman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/chelich01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Chelios<\/a> becomes the 11th blueliner to get 900 points. Chelios gets an assist in Detroit&#8217;s 2-1 win over St. Louis. He finishes with 948 points in 1,651 career games.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2005:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/senators\/\" target=\"_self\">Ottawa Senators<\/a> goalie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/emeryra01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ray Emery<\/a> sets a record with his ninth straight win to open his career. He makes 27 saves to get his first career shutout in a 4-0 victory over Montreal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2007:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/canucks\/\" target=\"_self\">Vancouver Canucks<\/a> netminder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/luongro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roberto Luongo<\/a> extends his personal shutout streak to a team-record 193:56. He makes 26 saves in a 2-0 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/bluejackets\/\" target=\"_self\">Columbus Blue Jackets<\/a> to surpass <span id=\"token-10D88F8B49258527DD5A8\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lockeke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ken Lockett<\/a>&#8216;s 1975 mark.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2018:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/jets\/\" target=\"_self\">Winnipeg Jets<\/a> forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lainepa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrik Laine<\/a> becomes to fourth-youngest to 100 career goals. The Finnish winger gets two goals in a 6-5 victory over Chicago.
