He retires as the team&#8217;s all-time leader in goals with 406. Gilbert is also the team&#8217;s all-time leader in points with 1,021.<\/p>\n<p>The Montreal native enters the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982 and his No. 7 sweater is retired 1979. He was the first Rangers player to have his number raised to the rafters at Madison Square Garden.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1926:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_self\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> rookie goalie<span id=\"token-6E7BC19B8476BC4AC26AC\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"> George Hainsworth shuts out the New York Americans, 2-0. It&#8217;s the first of 14 shutouts for the 1926-27 season and 94 for his career.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>1982:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/islanders\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Islanders<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/stars\/\" target=\"_self\">Minnesota North Stars<\/a> play to a wild 8-8 tie on Long Island. <span id=\"token-C188E291A3678F785F193\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">Steve Payne<\/span> and <span id=\"token-865471429C9D38844DFB7\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">Neal Broten each net three goals while <span id=\"token-FCDF28529F888C16947AF\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">Bryan Trottier is the only Islanders&#8217; player to score more than once.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>1988:<\/strong> Wayne Gretzky of the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/kings\/\" target=\"_self\"> Los Angeles Kings<\/a> scores his<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2020\/10\/15\/today-in-hockey-history-kings-wayne-gretzky-passes-gordie-howe\/\" target=\"_self\"> 600th career goal<\/a> in an 8-3 rout of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/redwings\/\" target=\"_self\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a>. Gretzky is the fifth player to reach the milestone after first-period goal on a pass from Dave Taylor. The Great One gets to 600 goals in just 718 career games.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2002:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/bruins\/\" target=\"_self\">Boston Bruins<\/a> are the second franchise to 2,500 NHL games. Boston scores three power-play goals in a 4-1 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/sabres\/\" target=\"_self\">Buffalo Sabres<\/a>. Only Montreal has reached 2,500 wins at the time.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"token-AE28EF6E05A111834B894\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">Dave Andreychuk<\/span> becomes the 14th player in NHL history to score 600 goals as the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/lightning\/\" target=\"_self\"> Tampa Bay Lightning<\/a> beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/devils\/\" target=\"_self\">New Jersey Devils<\/a>, 3-1, thanks to his two goals.<\/p>\n<p><b>2003: <\/b><span id=\"token-ED143EE0ACD16AF59B389\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">Mark Messier<\/span> of the Rangers joins <span id=\"token-C1CD4E8CC13B8ACC0FD8F\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">Gordie Howe<\/span> as the only players in NHL history to appear in 1,700 regular-season games. The Blueshirts beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/senators\/\" target=\"_self\">Ottawa Senators<\/a>, 3-1, despite Messier not getting a point.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2009:<\/strong> Islanders goalie <span id=\"token-98DC8052C7D1774BFC191\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">Dwayne Roloson withstands 61 shots as they beat the Toronto Maple Leafs, 4-3, in overtime. Josh Bailey gets the overtime-winner despite the Leafs getting the most shots in franchise history in a regular season game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2014:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2021\/09\/27\/new-york-rangers-to-retire-henrik-lundqvist-jersey\/\" target=\"_self\">Rangers Henrik Lundqvist<\/a> shuts out the Canadiens, 5-0, at MSG.
