Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date\u2019s historical significance to the game. We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for November 21st, featuring Patrick Marleau.

Today in Hockey History: November 21<\/h2>\n

Patrick Marleau Plays 1,000 Games<\/h3>\n

2015:<\/strong> The San Jose Sharks<\/a> forward plays his 1,000th game for his career. He becomes the 83rd player at the time in league history to reach that milestone. Marleau is also the 16th player to do this in one organization. San Jose would beat the Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a>, 3-1.<\/p>\n

The Swift Current, Saskatchewan native would stay with the Sharks until the end of the 2016-17 season. Marleau would return to San Jose for the 2019-20 season before being traded<\/a> to the Penguins. He would re-sign with the Sharks this off-season.<\/p>\n

Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n

1942:<\/strong> Regular-season overtime games go by the wayside due to World War II. The Board of Governors nixes OT due to conflicts with train schedules. Overtime would return for the 1983-84 season, but in a five-minute sudden death session instead of 10-minute periods.<\/p>\n

1943:<\/strong> The Montreal Canadiens<\/a> Buddy O’Connor gets his second five-point night in as many days. He gets his first hat trick in a 13-4 rout of the Boston Bruins<\/a>.<\/p>\n

1958:<\/strong> The Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> hire Punch Imlach as their new general manager. He replaces Hap Day in the role and becomes head coach eight days later. Imlach guides the Maple Leafs to three straight championships from 1962-64 and another in 1967.<\/p>\n

1964:<\/strong> Terry Sawchuk becomes the first goalie to get a shutout in his 16 straight seasons. The Toronto goalie beats Glenn Hall and the Chicago Black Hawks<\/a>, 1-0, en route to 19 straight seasons with a shutout.<\/p>\n

1971:<\/strong> The New York Rangers<\/a> Jean Ratelle gets four goals as the Blueshirts score the most goals in one game in team history. New York drubs the California Golden Seals, 12-1, at Madison Square Garden.<\/span><\/p>\n

2006:<\/strong> Jaromir Jagr of the Rangers becomes the highest-scoring European-trained player with two goals. Jagr passes Jari Kurri in the Rangers’ 4-0 triumph over the Carolina Hurricanes<\/a>. His tallies push him to 602 career goals all-time.<\/p>\n

2011:<\/strong> Penguins captain Sidney Crosby returns from a 10-month concussion-related layoff. He scores two goals and two assists in a 5-0 shutout of the New York Islanders<\/a>.<\/p>\n

2018:<\/strong> The Buffalo Sabres<\/a> get their seventh straight win with a 5-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers<\/a>. Jeff Skinner gets his 14th goal in 15 games to power Buffalo.<\/p>\n
