They knocked off the heavily favored Chicago Blackhawks in front of their hometown fans. This feat opened the eyes of many. Among most expert polls, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/story\/_\/id\/19121664\/nhl-2017-stanley-cup-playoffs-first-round-predictions\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">almost no one<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had the Predators defeating the Blackhawks. It would be unfair to say that the Blackhawks played their best. Credit for much of that, though, is due to the Predators. The neutral-zone trap the Predators deployed caused Chicago problems. <\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hossama01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marian Hossa<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0of the Blackhawks\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/sports\/scott-darlings-blackhawks-career-likely-at-an-end\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u2018\u2018We couldn\u2019t play the way we used to play\u2026 All of a sudden, we started playing a different game, and you could tell they were quicker, faster, more on the same page. And we were almost disoriented.\u2019\u2019 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of the day, the Predators won the series, and won it handily. They embarrassed a team that has three Cups in seven years. Now they move on to face the St. Louis Blues. The Blues took care of the Minnesota Wild in five games after edging the Predators out of the final divisional spot in the regular season. The Predators will need to be fantastic again if they hope to defeat the Blues and move on to the franchise\u2019s first Conference Final. They will do it\u00a0with strong team play carried over from\u00a0round one.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How the Nashville Predators Will Defeat the St. Louis Blues in Round Two<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the regular season, the Predators met the Blues five times. The Predators won three of these contests. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportingcharts.com\/nhl\/teams\/matchup\/4980-nashville-predators-2016-vs-4972-st.-louis-blues-2016\/#Team%20Winning%20%25\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both teams<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> generate a lot of offense from their blue line and\u00a0play a structured game in which they want to slow down the opposition\u2019s attack and generate offense with a heavy forecheck. Both teams had similar seasons that saw ups and downs. They competed for a playoff spot until the very end. On the surface, this is a tight matchup that should lend itself to some amazing hockey. When digging a bit deeper though, the Predators have an edge on the Blues that starts from the net out.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pekka Rinne<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When looking at the Predators vs. Blackhawks, it was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2017\/04\/14\/three-keys-for-nashville-predators-in-round-one\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impossible to ignore<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the amazing play of goaltender <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/rinnepe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Pekka Rinne<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Through four starts against the Blackhawks, Rinne allowed only three goals. He earned back-to-back shutouts in game one and two in Chicago. Nashville\u2019s structure and defense certainly went a long way to help the goaltender, but he was still called upon to make key saves. Throughout the season, some were questioning how much longer Rinne would be the number one in Nashville. The strong play of <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sarosju01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Juuse Saros<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and decline of Rinne\u2019s numbers had some thinking Saros would own the net sooner than later. Rinne has stepped up in a big way so far in the playoffs. If the Predators win, Rinne will need to be a huge factor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the best storylines in this series is likely to be the two goaltenders. Nashville\u2019s save percentage through round one in the playoffs <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhl.com\/stats\/player?aggregate=0&amp;gameType=3&amp;report=goaliesummary&amp;pos=G&amp;reportType=season&amp;seasonFrom=20162017&amp;seasonTo=20162017&amp;filter=timeOnIce,gte,240&amp;sort=savePctg,wins,goalsAgainstAverage\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is first in the league<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at an astounding .976. One spot behind, the St. Louis Blues. <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/allenja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jake Allen<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was fantastic in the first round as well, posting a .956 save percentage. If these two goaltenders can continue to play at this elevated level, fans should be in for a treat.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Defense Stays Solid<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both teams also boast similar strength at defense. Both blue lines contribute significantly on offense. During the regular season, <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/josiro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roman<\/a><\/b><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/josiro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Josi<\/a><\/strong>,<b>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/subbapk01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">P.K. Subban<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/ellisry01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Ellis<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">led the way for the Predators with 49, 40 and 38 points respectively. <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/pietral01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Pietrangelo<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/parayco01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colton Parayko<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pitched in 48 and 35 points for the Blues. Through the playoffs, Josi has three points, Ellis has four, and Subban has two. For the Blues, Pietrangelo has one point and Parayko has two. <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/edmunjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joel Edmundson<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/b>has\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stepped up for the Blues, scoring two goals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losing <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/shattke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Shattenkirk<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2017\/02\/27\/kevin-shattenkirk-traded-to\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a trade to the Washington Capitals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does not seem to be hurting the Blues too much at this point. Young players like Parayko and Edmundson have stepped up to fill the hole Shattenkirk left. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, the edge goes to the Predators based on experience. Ellis has looked like the Predators best defenseman this series, playing equally well in both ends. Subban has been relatively quiet, but still has game-changing ability if he decides his team needs a boost. Last round, the Predators held <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kanepa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Kane<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/toewsjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jonathan Toews<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/panarar01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Artemi Panarin<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to five points and two goals among them. Now they need to do the same against <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/tarasvl01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vladimir Tarasenko<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/schwaja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jaden Schwartz<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/steenal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Steen<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solving Jake Allen<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So knowing that they are facing a white hot goalie, how do the Predators generate enough offense to win four games? Keep doing what they did against the Blackhawks. Against the top team in the West, the Predators dominated the possession game. The team\u2019s score and venue adjusted <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.corsica.hockey\/teams\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5-on-5 Corsi-for percentage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was third highest in the league at 52.56%. The Blues, by contrast, was last in the league: 41.02%. That\u2019s quite a wide disparity that will start to show up in the scoreboard if Allen can not maintain his level of play. The Predators generate shots and chances with speed and hard forechecking. It wore down the Blackhawks; it will wear down the Blues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Predators top forward line has established itself as one of the most dangerous in the league. If the so-called \u201cJofa\u201d line of <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/arvidvi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Viktor Arvidsson<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/johanry01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Johansen<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/forsbfi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Filip Forsberg<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can dictate the game, it will not matter who is in net for the Blues. Against\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/crawfco01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Corey Crawford<\/a><\/strong>, the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/predators\/stats\/playoffs\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0trio combined<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for 15 points, each member producing at a point-per-game or better. Only one of those points, an assist by Johansen, came on the man advantage. Those are big numbers at even strength, where most of the playoffs are played.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/boudrbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bruce Boudreau<\/a><\/strong>, head coach of the Minnesota Wild, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/news\/wild-coach-boudreau-says-blues-werent-better-team-011940602.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said of the Blues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cThey weren\u2019t the better team\u2026 but they won four games.\u201d The Blues were out-shot in the series 182 to 134. <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dubnyde01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Devan Dubnyk<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the Minnesota Wild posted respectable numbers, but allowed 10 goals in the series. This was enough for Jake Allen to steal the show. The Blues may have snuck through one series, but with a hot goalie of their own and a faster, more opportunistic offense, the Predators gain the upper hand in round two.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Main Photo: ST.
