Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date\u2019s historical significance to the game. We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for November 14th, featuring Gerry Cheevers<\/a>.

Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n

Gerry Cheevers Begins Unbeaten Streak<\/h3>\n

1971:<\/strong> The Boston Bruins<\/a> goalie starts his 32-game unbeaten streak with an 11-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings.<\/a> Cheevers makes 29 saves as he starts his long run with the win. Bobby Orr<\/a> gets three goals and three assists and Phil Esposito<\/a> gets two goals and three assists.<\/p>\n

Cheevers goes 24-0 with eight ties during his historic run. He helped the Bruins win the Stanley Cup in the 1971-72 season before jumping to the World Hockey Association.<\/p>\n

Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n

1936:<\/strong> Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> defenceman King Clancy<\/a> scores the final goal of his career on a penalty shot. Clancy gets his 137th career marker in a 6-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks<\/a>. He retires one week later and enters the Hall of Fame in 1958.<\/p>\n

1957:<\/strong> Chicago’s Ted Lindsay<\/a> reaches third on the all-time goal-scoring list with his 325th goal. Lindsay scores in a 5-2 loss to Boston and sits behind Gordie Howe<\/a> and Maurice Richard<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n

1979:<\/strong> The Washington Capitals<\/a> name 26-year-old Gary Green as their new head coach. He becomes the youngest bench boss in the league but doesn’t get the Capitals to the post-season. Green is fired at the start of the 1981-82 season after a 1-12 start.<\/p>\n

1998:<\/strong> Dallas Stars<\/a> forward Brett Hull<\/a> becomes the 53rd player to get 1,000 career points. Hull gets two goals and a assist in the Stars’ 3-1 win over Boston. He and his father, Bobby Hull<\/a>, become the first father-son duo to reach 1,000 career points each. Brett ends his career in 2005 with 1,391 points (741 goals, 650 assists).<\/p>\n

2001:<\/strong> Colorado Avalanche<\/a> goalie Patrick Roy<\/a> is the first netminder<\/a> to get 200 wins with two teams. Roy won 289 games previously with the Montreal Canadiens<\/a>.<\/p>\n

2009:<\/strong> Tim Jackman<\/a> of the New York Islanders<\/a> gets the fastest goal by a birthday boy. He scores 16 seconds into a 5-4 shootout loss to the Florida Panthers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

2017:<\/strong> Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> star Sidney Crosby<\/a> breaks an 11-game scoring drought. He also sets up Conor Sheary<\/a>‘s game-winner in a 5-4 OT win over the Buffalo Sabres<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Vegas Golden Knights<\/a> use their fifth goalie of the season when emergency call up Dylan Ferguson<\/a> relieves Maxime Lagace<\/a> in an 8-2 loss to the Edmonton Oilers<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n
