Normally we\u2019d be in the midst of starting up another hockey season now, but we\u2019re in a different world. Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date\u2019s historical significance to the game. We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for November 10th, featuring Glenn Hall<\/a>.

Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n

Glenn Hall Sees Start Streak End<\/h3>\n

1962:<\/strong> The Chicago Black Hawks<\/a> goalie doesn’t play in the team’s 3-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens<\/a>. Hall started in a record 502 consecutive games before sitting out this game. He left a game against the Boston Bruins<\/a> a few days earlier due to back issues.<\/p>\n

Chicago wins behind backup goalie Dennis DeJordy’s 31 saves. DeJordy starts the next three games before Hall returns on Nov. 17. He enters the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1975.<\/p>\n

Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n

1934: <\/b>Armand Mondou<\/a> of Montreal is the first player to be given a penalty shot. Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> goalie George Hainsworth<\/a><\/span> stops the shot in a 2-1 overtime-win for the Leafs.<\/span><\/p>\n

1942:<\/strong> The New York Rangers<\/a> get overtime-goals by Bryan Hextall<\/a> Sr.<\/span> and Lynn Patrick<\/a> to beat Chicago, 5-3, in overtime. It’s the last overtime game played until 1983-84 when five-minute, sudden-death periods are introduced. Previous versions of overtime were a full 10-minute period.<\/span><\/p>\n

1963:<\/strong> Detroit Red Wings<\/a> great Gordie Howe<\/a> becomes the league’s all-time leading scorer with his 545th career goal. Howe passes Maurice Richard<\/a> for first all-time on the scoring list. Detroit’s No. 9 scores a shorthanded goal in a 3-0 win over Montreal. Howe gets the milestone goal exactly 17 years earlier after forming the Production Line with Ted Lindsay<\/a> and Alex Delvecchio<\/a>.<\/p>\n

1979:<\/strong> Michel Goulet<\/a><\/span> scores his first NHL goal for the Quebec Nordiques<\/a> in a 5-4 loss to the Rangers. Brendan Shanahan<\/a> does the same thing eight years later for the New Jersey Devils<\/a> in a 3-2 win over the Blueshirts.<\/p>\n

1999:<\/strong> Detroit’s Steve Yzerman<\/a> becomes the all-time leader in points for players that play for just one team. The Red Wings captain gets his 1,495th point in a 4-2 win over the Dallas Stars<\/a> to pass Mario Lemieux<\/a>. Yzerman finishes his career with 1,755 points, all with Detroit.<\/p>\n

2007:<\/strong> San Jose Sharks<\/a> forward Jeremy Roenick<\/a> scores his 500th career goal in a 4-1 win over the Phoenix Coyotes<\/a>. He’s the second American to score 500 goals in league history.<\/p>\n

2017:<\/strong> Florida Panthers<\/a> goalie Roberto Luongo<\/a> gets his 455th career victory. He makes 24 saves in a 4-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres.<\/a><\/p>\n
