Normally we\u2019d be in the midst of starting up another hockey season now, but we\u2019re in a different world. Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date\u2019s historical significance to the game. We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for November 9th, featuring Luc Robitaille<\/a>.<\/span>

Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n

Luc Robitaille<\/span> Gets No. 600<\/h3>\n

2001: The Detroit Red Wing<\/a>s winger gets the milestone goal in a 1-0 win over the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim<\/a>. Robitaille nets a power-play goal in the first period of the Detroit victory. He becomes the 13th player to reach the 600-goal plateau. Dominik Hasek<\/a> stops 19 shots to get the shutout.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Montreal native is part of the powerful Red Wings squad that sweeps the Presidents\u2019 Trophy and the Stanley Cup. He would return home<\/a> to the Los Angeles Kings<\/a> after one more season in Hockeytown.<\/p>\n

Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n

1944:<\/strong> The Montreal Canadiens\u2019\u00a0<\/a>“Punch Line” powers them to a 9-2 win over the Chicago Black Hawks<\/a>. Maurice Richard<\/a> gets a hat trick and two assists, but Elmer Lach<\/a> and Toe Blake<\/a> each get six points.<\/p>\n

1957:<\/strong> Claude Provost<\/a> of the Habs sets the league record for fastest goal to start a period in four seconds. Denis Savard<\/a><\/span> and James van Riemsdyk<\/a> have since tied the mark.<\/p>\n

1972:<\/b> Boston Bruins<\/a> left wing Johnny Bucyk<\/span> becomes the seventh player in NHL history to have 1,000 points. He gets a goal and an assist in an 8-3 win over Detroit.<\/p>\n

1973:<\/strong> The Red Wings\u2019\u00a0Alex Delvecchio<\/a> retires after 24 years with the team and is named head coach. He retires with 1,281 points (456 goals, 825 assists) in 1,549 games.<\/p>\n

1977:<\/strong> The New York Rangers\u2019<\/a> Phil Esposito<\/a> becomes the league’s second-leading-scorer in an 8-4 win over the Buffalo Sabres<\/a>. His four-point night gives Esposito 1,354 for his career.<\/p>\n

1984: <\/b>The Edmonton Oilers<\/a> defeat the Washington Capitals<\/a> 8-5 for the record for best start to a season. Wayne Gretzky<\/a> gets two goals and four assists as Edmonton goes 12-0-3 to start the season.<\/p>\n

1996:<\/strong> Craig MacTavish<\/a> scores the last goal by a helmet-less player in the St. Louis Blues\u2019<\/a> 3-2 win over the Calgary Flames.<\/a> MacTavish was grandfathered in when helmets were made mandatory in 1979.<\/p>\n

2005:<\/strong> Carolina Hurricanes<\/a> forward Erik Cole<\/a> is the second player to be awarded two penalty shots in one game. He scores on the first one to give Carolina a 5-3 win over Buffalo.<\/p>\n

2006:<\/strong> Anaheim sets a record with a point in their 16th straight game to start a season. The Ducks beat the Vancouver Canucks<\/a>, 6-0, to go 12-0-4.<\/p>\n
