Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date\u2019s historical significance to the game. We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for November 4th, featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gadsbbi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bill Gadsby<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Bill Gadsby Reaches 500 Points<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1962:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/redwings\/\" target=\"_self\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> defenceman becomes the first blueliner in league history to have 500 career points. Gadsby picks up an assist in the Wings&#8217; 3-1 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_self\">Chicago Black Hawks.<\/a> He&#8217;d go on to pick up 28 points for the 1962-63 season.<\/p>\n<p>The Calgary native played for Chicago, Detroit and the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/rangers\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Rangers<\/a> in his 20-year NHL career. He&#8217;d finish with 568 points on 130 goals and 438 assists. Gadsby enters the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1970 and would pass away in March 2016.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1977:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/esposph01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phil Esposito<\/a> becomes the third player to score 600 goals in league history. He joins <span id=\"token-4E79E5A2713E455751D90\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howego01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gordie Howe<\/a><\/span> and <span id=\"token-DFB263ACAB56DFCFC6ABC\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hullbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Hull<\/a> on the list with a power-play marker in the Rangers&#8217; 5-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>1987:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gretzwa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayne Gretzky<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/oilers\/\" target=\"_self\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a> beats <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dionnma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcel Dionne<\/a> of the Rangers to 1,000 career assists. Gretzky and Dionne both have 998 helpers at the start of play, but Gretzky gets two to reach the milestone. The Great One gets No. 1,000 in <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2020\/10\/14\/today-in-hockey-history-edmonton-oilers-wayne-gretzky-scores-first-nhl-goal\/\" target=\"_self\">his 645th career game<\/a>. Dionne gets one assist, but reaches 1,000 in the next game against his former longtime <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/kings\/\" target=\"_self\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1998:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/sharks\/\" target=\"_self\">San Jose Sharks<\/a> beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/stars\/\" target=\"_self\">Dallas Stars,<\/a> 4-0, on just nine shots. It&#8217;s the lowest shot total for a winning team in NHL history since shots were tracked in 1955-56. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/v\/vernomi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Vernon<\/a> makes 21 saves in the win for San Jose.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2003:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/messima01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Messier<\/a> moves up to second in the NHL&#8217;s leading scorers list. He scores twice in a 3-0 Rangers&#8217; victory over the Stars. Messier (1,851 points) passes Howe and moves into second place behind Gretzky.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2014:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/ovechal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Ovechkin<\/a> becomes the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/capitals\/\" target=\"_self\">Washington Capitals<\/a> all-time leading scorer in franchise history. He passes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bondrpe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Peter Bondra<\/a> with a pair of assists in a 4-3 overtime loss to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/flames\/\" target=\"_self\">Calgary Flames<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2016:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/bluejackets\/\" target=\"_self\">Columbus Blue Jackets<\/a> hit the 10-goal mark for the first time in franchise history. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/atkinca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cam Atkinson<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/foligni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick Foligno<\/a> and <span id=\"token-4378B43E2EF317953A5A7\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hartnsc01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scott Hartnell<\/a><\/span> each score twice in a 10-0 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_self\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a>.
