Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for November 2nd, featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gretzwa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayne Gretzky<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Wayne Gretzky Becomes an Oiler<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1978:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/oilers\/\" target=\"_self\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a> acquire the young centre from the Indianapolis Racers because of Indy&#8217;s financial troubles. Racers owner Nelson Skalbania sells Gretzky, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mioed01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eddie Mio<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/driscpe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Peter Driscoll<\/a> to Edmonton. Gretzky finishes the season with 110 points (46 goals, 64 assists) and is named the last WHA Rookie of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>Edmonton becomes one of the four teams from the WHA to merge into the NHL in 1979-80. Gretzky becomes a <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2020\/10\/01\/today-in-hockey-history-oilers-retire-99-of-wayne-gretzky\/\" target=\"_self\">cornerstone of the Oilers&#8217; dynasty<\/a> of the 1980&#8217;s that won three Stanley Cups.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1937:<\/strong> The second All-Star game is held at the Montreal Forum as a benefit to the family of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/morenho01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Howie Morenz<\/a>. A crowd of 8,683 watches the NHL All-Stars win 6-5 against a mixed team of <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_self\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> and Montreal Maroons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1968:<\/strong> Montreal wins in the newly renovated Forum with a 2-1 victory over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/redwings\/\" target=\"_self\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/belivje01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jean Beliveau<\/a> scores the opening goal in the remodeled building just 4:38 into the first period.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1969:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howego01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gordie Howe<\/a> scores his 19th and final career hat trick in Detroit&#8217;s 4-3 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/penguins\/\" target=\"_self\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a>. Howe becomes the oldest player to get a hat trick at age 41.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1975:<\/strong> Former <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/rangers\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Rangers<\/a> goalie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/giacoed01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ed Giacomin<\/a> returns to Madison Square Garden for the first time since being acquired by Detroit. He makes 42 saves in a 6-4 Red Wings victory.<\/p>\n<p><b>1977: <\/b><span id=\"token-CA4D9EDE7411AEF86EDBD\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/marukde01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dennis Maruk<\/a><\/span> becomes the fourth player in NHL history to score <span id=\"token-84D92E62BB970CD0D5489\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">at least four goals in a game and account for all his team&#8217;s scoring. Maruk&#8217;s four goals help the Cleveland Barons get a 4-4 tie with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/blues\/\" target=\"_self\">St. Louis Blues.<\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>1982:<\/strong> Pittsburgh ends the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/islanders\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Islanders<\/a> 30-game unbeaten streak at home with a 2-1 win at Nassau Coliseum. The Islanders went 28-0-2 during the run.<\/p>\n<p><b>2006: <\/b><span id=\"token-2446FE9581485FDA0A3B1\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/backsni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Niklas Backstrom<\/a><\/span> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/wild\/\" target=\"_self\">Minnesota Wild<\/a> becomes the first goalie in the NHL&#8217;s modern era (since 1943-44) to earn his first two victories before making his first start. He comes in for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fernama01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Manny Fernandez<\/a> and stops 19 shots in a 5-2 win over the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/canucks\/\" target=\"_self\"> Vancouver Canucks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>2014: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/frolimi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Frolik<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/jets\/\" target=\"_self\">Winnipeg Jets<\/a> scores the game&#8217;s only goal just<span id=\"token-9E1E1A041A341D8688F87\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"> 20 seconds into the game<\/span> against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_self\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a>.
