Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for October 26th, featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gretzwa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayne Gretzky<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Wayne Gretzky Nets Point No. 2,000<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1990:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/kings\/\" target=\"_self\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a> great is <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2020\/10\/15\/today-in-hockey-history-kings-wayne-gretzky-passes-gordie-howe\/\" target=\"_self\">the first to 2,000 points<\/a> after an assist in a 6-2 loss to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/coyotes\/\" target=\"_self\">Winnipeg Jets<\/a>. The helper gives Gretzky 684 goals and 1,316 assists in 857 NHL games. He finishes the 1990-91 season with 41 goals and 122 assists for 163 points.<\/p>\n<p>The Great One gets two assists seven years later while as a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/rangers\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Rangers<\/a>. He gets assist 1,850 and 1,851 in a 3-3 tie with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/ducks\/\" target=\"_self\">Mighty Ducks of Anaheim<\/a>. Gretzky finishes with 2,857 points for his career.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1978:<\/strong> Kings goalie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lessama01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mario Lessard<\/a> is the 14th goalie to earn a shutout in his NHL debut. Lessard gets plenty of backup from his team in a 6-0 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/sabres\/\" target=\"_self\">Buffalo Sabres<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>1989: <\/b><span id=\"token-ED533076CA1B7DEEB8B85\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mylnise01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sergei Mylnikov<\/a> is the first goalie from the Soviet Union to play an NHL game. He makes 31 saves in the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_self\">Quebec Nordiques<\/a> 4-2 loss at the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/bruins\/\" target=\"_self\">Boston Bruins.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>1992:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gartnmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Gartner<\/a> passes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/richama01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maurice Richard<\/a> for ninth on the all-time goal scoring list. Gartner scores twice in the Rangers 8-4 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/capitals\/\" target=\"_self\">Washington Capitals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1995:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lemiema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mario Lemieux<\/a> notches a hat trick to become the 20th player to net 500 career goals. He reaches the mark in his 605th career game in the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/penguins\/\" target=\"_self\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> 7-5 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/islanders\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Islanders<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1997:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/redwings\/\" target=\"_self\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> captain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/y\/yzermst01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steve Yzerman<\/a> passes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/delveal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Delvecchio<\/a> for longest serving captain in NHL history. Yzerman was captain for 11 years and 12 games at that point in the season. Detroit beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/canucks\/\" target=\"_self\">Vancouver Canucks<\/a>, 5-1, to start the season at 6-0-0.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2002:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/blues\/\" target=\"_self\"> St. Louis Blues<\/a> become the first team in league history to win four straight games with four different goalies. <span id=\"token-8DF94C15E65AD13ADB594\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/brathfr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fred Brathwaite<\/a> stops 18 shots in the Blues&#8217; 4-3 overtime victory against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/flames\/\" target=\"_self\">Calgary Flames<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2006:<\/strong> Buffalo ties the league record for best start to a season with its 10th straight win. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/millery01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Miller<\/a> stops 29 shots as the Sabres blank the Islanders, 3-0, at Nassau Coliseum.
