Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for October 24th, featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/roypa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Roy<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/roypa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Roy<\/a> Tops Goalie Games Mark<\/h3>\n<p><strong>2002:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_self\">Colorado Avalanche<\/a> goalie passes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sawchte01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Terry Sawchuk<\/a> for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2020\/03\/28\/today-in-history-colorado-avalanche-patrick-roy-gets-win-mark\/\" target=\"_self\">most games played by a goalie<\/a>. Roy plays in his 972nd career game in Colorado&#8217;s 3-2 win over the Phoenix Coyotes. He makes 27 saves in the victory over the Coyotes.<\/p>\n<p>Roy would go on to make 1,029 career appearances before retiring after the 2002-03 season. He would hold the appearance record until <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/devils\/\" target=\"_self\">New Jersey Devils<\/a> goalie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/brodema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Martin Brodeur<\/a> would break it. Roy enters the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006 in his first year of eligibility.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1945:<\/strong> <span id=\"token-84319ADFF352918A55B86\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hamilre02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Red Hamill<\/a><\/span> scores two unassisted goals in the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_self\">Chicago Black Hawks<\/a> 5-4 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/bruins\/\" target=\"_self\">Boston Bruins<\/a>. It&#8217;s the only game in earliest opening night since 1917-18.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1972:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lemaija01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jacques Lemaire<\/a> gets his third career hat trick in the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_self\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> 4-3 win over the New York Islanders. It&#8217;s the first hat trick at the Nassau Coliseum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1976:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/orrbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Orr<\/a> is the first defenceman scores twice to become the first defenceman to reach 900 career points. Orr&#8217;s goals lead Chicago to a 7-2 victory over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/blues\/\" target=\"_self\">St. Louis Blues<\/a>, but he&#8217;d only score once more before missing the rest of the season and next with knee injuries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1981:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bossymi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Bossy<\/a> is the first Islanders player to score 250 career goals. He reaches the milestone in his 315th game, which is the fastest at the time. Bossy also adds a pair of assists in a 6-4 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/capitals\/\" target=\"_self\">Washington Capitals<\/a>. He would retire exactly seven years later after back problems. Bossy would finish with 1,126 points (573 goals, 553 assists) in 752 games.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1987:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/penguins\/\" target=\"_self\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lemiema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mario Lemieux<\/a> scores a hat trick in a 5-3 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/sabres\/\" target=\"_self\">Buffalo Sabres<\/a>. It&#8217;s the ninth career hat trick for Lemieux, who is only one month into his fourth season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2015:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_self\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> break the regular season record for most regulation wins to start a campaign. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/priceca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carey Price<\/a> makes 49 saves in the Habs&#8217; 5-3 victory over the rival <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/leafs\/\" target=\"_self\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a>. Montreal starts the season 9-0-0 and that&#8217;s one more of the 1975-76 Sabres.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2019:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/atkinca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cam Atkinson<\/a> scores in overtime to give the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/bluejackets\/\" target=\"_self\">Columbus Blue Jackets<\/a> 4-3 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_self\">Carolina Hurricanes<\/a>.
