The 23-year-old was drafted in the second round, 57th overall of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft by the Washington Capitals.

The defenceman made his NHL debut on November 9, 2018, in a match against the Columbus Blue Jackets. He played 26 games in a Capitals jersey during the 2018-19 seasons, registering four points, all assists, and 10 penalty minutes.

Siegenthaler recorded nine points, two goals, and seven assists, in 63 games last season and added 43 penalty minutes. The 63 games would be a new career-high for the young defender. Siegenthaler scored his first career NHL goal during the past season, on November 9, 2019, against the Vegas Golden Knights. The 23-year-old defenceman was tied for 11th in the NHL and led the Capitals in penalty kill minutes per game, with an average of 3:11 per game. He was also second on the team in blocked shots, 105.

What This Means for the Future

Siegenthaler was very impressive in his first full season in the NHL. The 23-year-old Swiss is a great candidate for a future top-four blueliner. Many have argued that the young player’s new AAV could have been higher. However, with the team in a very delicate situation with its salary cap, it was a good deal to keep him for another year and see what else he can do.

Even though Washington already has already brought in Justin Schultz and Trevor van Riemsdyk this offseason, having some more depth is never a bad thing. Not to mention a player that they have groomed themselves. Siegenthaler was a major part of the Capitals’ penalty kill this season. He’s a young, fearless player who is up to the task no matter what situation he is playing in. Signing the one-year deal allows Siegenthaler to bet on himself with the hopes to earn a larger contract next offseason.

Main Photo

Embed from Getty Images

The Washington Capitals have re-signed restricted free agent defenceman Jonas Siegenthaler to a one-year contract worth $800,000 that will carry him through the 2020-21 season.
