Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for October 21st, featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/esposph01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phil Esposito<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Phil Esposito Scores 1,500th Point<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1979:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/rangers\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Rangers<\/a> forward reaches the 1,500-point milestone with a power-play goal at 16:56 of the first period. New York would go on to beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/penguins\/\" target=\"_self\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a>, 6-3, at Madison Square Garden.<\/p>\n<p>The goal would put Esposito as only one of two players to top 1,500 points at that time. Esposito would join Detroit Red Wings great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howego01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gordie Howe<\/a> with that number of points. &#8220;Espo&#8221; would finish with 1,590 points after retiring after the 1980-81 season. He <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2020\/04\/08\/today-in-hockey-history-phil-esposito-powers-boston-bruins\/\" target=\"_self\">enters the Hall of Fame<\/a> in 1984.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1954:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kellyre01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Red Kelly<\/a> is the second <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/redwings\/\" target=\"_self\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> defenceman to score three goals in a game. Kelly gets his hat trick in a 5-3 victory over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/bruins\/\" target=\"_self\">Boston Bruins.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>1962:<\/strong> Detroit&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gadsbbi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bill Gadsby<\/a> is the second player in league history to appear in 1,000 career games. Gadsby joins Howe in the 1,000 game-club in a 3-1 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_self\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1988:<\/strong> Future Hall of Famers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/laflegu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guy Lafleur<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dionnma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcel Dionne<\/a> score their first goals as Rangers&#8217; teammates. Dionne nets a power-play goal at 7:52 of the first period while Lafleur nets a goal at 5:30 of the third. The goals help the Blueshirts beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/capitals\/\" target=\"_self\">Washington Capitals<\/a>, 4-1.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1993:<\/strong> Officiating is all in the family as Paul Devorski is the referee and brother, Greg, are the first brothers to be officials for an NHL game. Detroit would roll to a 6-2 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/coyotes\/\" target=\"_self\">Winnipeg Jets<\/a> at the Joe Louis Arena.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/leafs\/\" target=\"_self\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> tie a franchise-record with their eighth straight win to start the season. Toronto beats the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/panthers\/\" target=\"_self\">Florida Panthers<\/a>, 4-3, in overtime at the Miami Arena.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1997:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lindrer01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eric Lindros<\/a>&#8216; 200th career goal and four assist lead the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/flyers\/\" target=\"_self\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a> to a 7-1 rout of the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/lightning\/\" target=\"_self\"> Tampa Bay Lightning<\/a>. Lindros reaches 200 goals in 307 games, which is the fifth-fastest to the milestone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2000:<\/strong> Detroit and Chicago play their 5,000th career games in the NHL. Chicago is shut out, 1-0, by the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/blues\/\" target=\"_self\"> St. Louis Blues<\/a> while Detroit beats the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/sabres\/\" target=\"_self\">Buffalo Sabres<\/a>, 5-4, in overtime.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2018:<\/strong> Tampa Bay attempts a record 33 shots in the second period of its 6-3 win over Chicago.
