The offseason has slowed down since the initial frenzy at the beginning but there is still plenty of stuff happening. Teams continue to build out their rosters for the 2020-21 season in the hopes that activity can mostly return to normal in spite of a global pandemic. Today&#8217;s NHL rumours feature the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/senators\/\" target=\"_self\">Ottawa Senators<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/leafs\/\" target=\"_self\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/blues\/\" target=\"_self\">St. Louis Blues<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>NHL Rumours<\/h2>\n<h3>Ottawa Senators<\/h3>\n<p><em>Rumour: Pierre LeBrun is indicating that the Senators are not done spending money this offseason.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">And I don&#39;t think the Senators are done this off-season, there&#39;s a few more moves potentially<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PierreVLeBrun\/status\/1316802743936389125?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">October 15, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><em>Analysis: <\/em>Ottawa <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2020\/10\/15\/evgenii-dadonov-signs-with-ottawa-senators\/\" target=\"_self\">signed<\/a> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dadonev01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Evgenii Dadonov<\/a> <\/strong>on Thursday but that can&#8217;t possibly be the last move before the 2020-21 regular season. That contract leaves them with $60.062 million in salary commitments, which is roughly $140 thousand below the league&#8217;s cap floor of $60.2 million. The Senators will probably find a way to spend as little of their $21.44 million in remaining cap space as possible but money will go somewhere.<\/p>\n<p>There are still major holes in the roster to address if the team wants to do so. Forward depth is very weak outside of a projected top-line featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/tkachbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brady Tkachuk<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=whiteco01,whiteco02&amp;search=Colin+White&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colin White<\/a><\/strong>, and Dadonov. The bottom-nine might feature at least one rookie in <strong>Tim Stutzle<\/strong> and several other young, unproven options. The blue line also seems very poor with only <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/chaboth01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thomas Chabot<\/a><\/strong> as a guaranteed producer.<\/p>\n<p>The open market contains several respectable options to improve both the forward and defencemen groups. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/soderca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carl Soderberg<\/a><\/strong> would be an inexpensive veteran addition to help down the middle after 17 goals and 35 points in 70 games for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/coyotes\/\" target=\"_self\">Arizona Coyotes<\/a>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=hoffmmi02,hoffmmi01&amp;search=Mike+Hoffman&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Hoffman<\/a><\/strong> would provide points on the wing as one of the better pure scorers left on the market. If the team would prefer a defensive reinforcement, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hamontr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Travis Hamonic<\/a><\/strong> is probably the best of the remaining options. Anyone one of them would help Ottawa win more games without endangering draft position or costing too much money.<\/p>\n<h3>Toronto Maple Leafs<\/h3>\n<p><em>Rumour: Elliotte Friedman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/nhl\/31-thoughts-inside-tough-tense-early-days-nhl-free-agency\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">detailed<\/a> on his recent 31 Thoughts that the Leafs have expressed interest in veteran <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/thornjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Thornton<\/a><\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Analysis:\u00a0<\/em>Toronto would need to clear a bit of money but Thornton might be an ideal bottom-six addition. The 41-year-old posted seven goals and 31 in 70 games in 2019-20, which is fantastic for a player of that age. The Maple Leafs might fit in either next to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/simmowa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayne Simmonds<\/a><\/strong> or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/spezzja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jason Spezza<\/a><\/strong> as gritty older players who still have some offensive punch left.<\/p>\n<p>Thornton recently <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2020\/10\/15\/joe-thornton-signs-with-hcdavos\/\" target=\"_self\">signed<\/a> a deal with HC Davos in Switzerland but might be tempted to come back for a real contender like Toronto. He&#8217;d add plenty of experience to a roster that has been short on such things in recent years. The Leafs might also represent one of the best options he has to chase a Stanley Cup if another contender isn&#8217;t interested.<\/p>\n<p>However, the biggest obstacle to this signing isn&#8217;t necessarily money. It is Thornton&#8217;s long-standing relationship with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/sharks\/\" target=\"_self\">San Jose Sharks<\/a>. The Pacific Division team probably won&#8217;t be very good in 2020-21 and they do have the money to bring back the franchise icon. They still have $2.35 million in space and have brought back both <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/marlepa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Marleau<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nietoma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew Nieto<\/a><\/strong>. Thornton might want to come back and play with former teammates for one more season even if it might not end well.<\/p>\n<h3>St. Louis Blues<\/h3>\n<p><em>Rumour: The same Friedman article also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/nhl\/31-thoughts-inside-tough-tense-early-days-nhl-free-agency\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reveals<\/a> a league-wide concern regarding what the Blues will do with young defender <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dunnvi02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vince Dunn<\/a><\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Analysis:\u00a0<\/em>The Blues are in a major cap crunch. They are $1.2 million over the salary ceiling and can&#8217;t sign the promising defenceman without another move. It would be a surprise if St. Louis did nothing and allowed one of the most promising defensive prospects in the organization to depart. Dunn just posted a third consecutive season with over 20 points. He should be a rockstar if gets a bigger role in St. Louis.<\/p>\n<p>The team just needs to make space for him. He averaged just 16:16 per game and 1:29 on the power-play. He is capable of far more. That time should go up in the coming season except the team <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2020\/10\/09\/torey-krug-signs-with-st-louis-blues\/\" target=\"_self\">signed<\/a> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/krugto01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Torey Krug<\/a><\/strong> to replace departed star, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/pietral01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Pietrangelo<\/a><\/strong>. Then there&#8217;s the presence of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/faulkju01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Justin Faulk<\/a><\/strong>, who has extensive power-play experience himself. The Blues seem very intent to limit opportunities for the 2015 second-round selection.<\/p>\n<p>St. Louis will have to move at least one player if they want to retain the developing mainstay.\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bozakty01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyler Bozak<\/a><\/strong> is the most obvious trade candidate with his cap hit of $5 million for one more year but league-wide cap concerns and a partial no-trade clause complicates things. Those circumstances might force the team to move two cheaper players like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sundqos01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oskar Sundqvist<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/barbaiv01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ivan Barbashev<\/a><\/strong>.
