Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date\u2019s historical significance to the game. We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for October 13, featuring the first NHL All-Star Game.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>NHL All-Star Game Played for the First Time<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1947:<\/strong> The first All-Star Game is played at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. It&#8217;s a different format than the current All-Star Games that are played. The Stanley Cup champion <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/leafs\/\" target=\"_self\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> take on a team of All-Stars from the other five teams.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bentldo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Doug Bentley<\/strong><\/a> helps the league All-Stars rally for a 4-3 win over the Leafs. The game benefits the player&#8217;s pension fund, but changes format in 1968 to East vs. West.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><b>1970:<\/b> Roger Doucet sings &#8220;O Canada&#8221; at the Montreal Forum in the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_self\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> 4-3 victory over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/redwings\/\" target=\"_self\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a>. He sings the anthem for the next 10 years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1973: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/worslgu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gump Worsley<\/a><\/strong> finally dons a mask in an NHL game. He was the last goalie to not wear a mask, but does so in the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/stars\/\" target=\"_self\"> Minnesota North Stars<\/a> 4-3 loss to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/sabres\/\" target=\"_self\">Buffalo Sabres<\/a>. &#8220;Gumper&#8221; makes 30 saves for Minnesota.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1992:<\/strong> The league experiments with playing two neutral site games per season. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/flames\/\" target=\"_self\">Calgary Flames<\/a> beat Minnesota, 4-3, in front of a crowd of 8,783 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Neutral site games are played for the next two seasons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1993: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/tugnuro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ron Tugnutt<\/a><\/strong> makes 28 saves as the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/ducks\/\" target=\"_self\">Mighty Ducks of Anaheim<\/a> win their first game in franchise history. Anaheim scores the first four goals of the game to hang on against the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/oilers\/\" target=\"_self\"> Edmonton Oilers<\/a>, 4-3.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/rangers\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Rangers<\/a> score a record six power-play goals in a 6-4 victory over the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_self\"> Quebec Nordiques<\/a>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/leetcbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brian Leetch<\/a><\/strong> scores a pair of extra-man goals for the Blueshirts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1998:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/predators\/\" target=\"_self\">Nashville Predators<\/a> win their first game in franchise history, 3-2, over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_self\">Carolina Hurricanes<\/a>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/brunean01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrew Brunette<\/a><\/strong> scores the first goal in team history for the Predators.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2015:<\/strong> Montreal beats the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/penguins\/\" target=\"_self\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> to go 4-0-0 for the first time since 1977. <span id=\"token-D31F5B26DE34EE927E3B4\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fleisto01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tomas Fleischmann<\/a><\/strong> scored 5:20 into the third period to give the Habs a 3-2 victory. Pittsburgh drops to 0-3-0 for their worst start since the 2005-06 season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2017: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/ovechal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Ovechkin<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2020\/03\/14\/alex-ovechkin-race-catch-wayne-gretzky\/\" target=\"_self\"> is the fourth player since 1967<\/a> to get nine goals in the first five games of the season.
