Soccer teams, in particular, change their\u00a0kit\u00a0design every year\u00a0to keep people buying. Over the last 25 years, fans have started to dress more and more like their heroes. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"647vj\" data-offset-key=\"24gnn-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"24gnn-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"24gnn-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"647vj\" data-offset-key=\"cpr96-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"cpr96-0-0\"><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"cpr96-0-0\">Bill Fitsell, founder of the Society for International Hockey Research (SIHR), described the fan participation at today\u2019s sporting events in an email<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"cpr96-1-0\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"647vj\" data-offset-key=\"8ukbp-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"8ukbp-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"8ukbp-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"647vj\" data-offset-key=\"9o0la-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"9o0la-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9o0la-0-0\">\u201cToday\u2019s fans find it necessary to \u2018be a part of the team\u2019,\u201d he wrote, \u201cnot <\/span><span class=\"qualifier\"><span data-offset-key=\"9o0la-1-0\">just<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"9o0la-2-0\"> spectators and admirers. They high five as if they <\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"9o0la-3-0\">personally<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"9o0la-4-0\"> contributed to a score or a win.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"647vj\" data-offset-key=\"12pf2-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"12pf2-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"12pf2-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"647vj\" data-offset-key=\"2ks5o-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"2ks5o-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"2ks5o-0-0\">Fitsell would argue that this mentality has led to the rise of jerseys. Today,\u00a0they&#8217;re as much the uniform of the fan as they are\u00a0the player.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"9gg4l-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9gg4l-0-0\">Origins and Fashion Choices<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"647vj\" data-offset-key=\"fdrtl-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"fdrtl-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"fdrtl-0-0\">Where did this come from, though? <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"fdrtl-1-0\">Most sports uniforms \u2014\u00a0except <\/span><\/span><span class=\"qualifier\"><span data-offset-key=\"fdrtl-2-0\">maybe<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"fdrtl-3-0\"> soccer shirts \u2014 are pretty impractical as items of clothing<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"fdrtl-4-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"fdrtl-5-0\">Some historians suggest that hip hop groups in the 1980s, like N.W.A., deserve some of the credit for popularizing sports merchandise as a fashion item<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"fdrtl-6-0\">. Others look before then, to the early 70s.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"647vj\" data-offset-key=\"dnpl0-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"dnpl0-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"dnpl0-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"647vj\" data-offset-key=\"4pp7a-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"4pp7a-0-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/2016\/02\/01\/mlb-nba-nhl-sports-jersys-rise-popularity\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-offset-key=\"4pp7a-0-0\">In an article for <\/span><span data-offset-key=\"4pp7a-0-1\">Sports Illustrated<\/span><\/a><span data-offset-key=\"4pp7a-1-0\">, Tim Layden discovered an ad buried in a 1971 copy of <\/span><span data-offset-key=\"4pp7a-1-1\">The Sporting News.<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"4pp7a-1-2\">\u00a0A Spokane, WA company offered \u201cquality, authentic game jerseys\u201d in the colours of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/nfl.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-offset-key=\"4pp7a-2-0\">NFL<\/span><\/a><span data-offset-key=\"4pp7a-3-0\"> teams.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"647vj\" data-offset-key=\"5btld-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"5btld-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"5btld-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"647vj\" data-offset-key=\"89kjd-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"89kjd-0-0\"><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"89kjd-0-0\">It seems the public demand for sports jerseys grew as public dress standards relaxed, and merchandise began appearing in pop culture<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"89kjd-1-0\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h1 class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"1e5ri-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"1e5ri-0-0\">A History of the Hockey Sweater: How the Calgary Flames Spawned a Phenomenon<\/span><\/h1>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"647vj\" data-offset-key=\"el1nd-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"el1nd-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"el1nd-0-0\">The hockey jersey, though, has the most exciting story, as a literal piece of the fabric of Canadiana. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"el1nd-1-0\">Over its hundred-plus year history, it\u2019s evolved from a literal wool sweater into a polyester garment that\u2019s <\/span><\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"el1nd-2-0\">uniquely<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"el1nd-3-0\"> hockey<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"el1nd-4-0\">. Only children wore jerseys in public.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"d7m56-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"d7m56-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"d7m56-4-0\">It would take a few more decades for them to begin showing up in the stands of NHL games (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sjupnYB5vUI\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-offset-key=\"d7m56-5-0\">excepting one incident in 1979<\/span><\/a><span data-offset-key=\"d7m56-6-0\">).<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"647vj\" data-offset-key=\"9rjht-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"9rjht-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9rjht-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"647vj\" data-offset-key=\"427r2-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"427r2-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"427r2-0-0\">Canadians could order adult-sized sweaters for $2.10 back then; about $37 in today\u2019s money. In the 1948 catalogue (right), we can see what Carrier\u2019s mother would\u2019ve ordered from. It would take a few more years for NHL teams to catch on and go all-in on authentic merchandise sales.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"251a8-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"251a8-0-0\">The C of Red, 2.0<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"647vj\" data-offset-key=\"9ggv5-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"9ggv5-0-0\"><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"9ggv5-0-0\">In 1989, the C of Red returned as the Flames went to the final again \u2014 this time prevailing to bring home the franchise\u2019s first (and only) Stanley Cup<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"9ggv5-1-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"9ggv5-2-0\">Photos from that year show even more jerseys in the crowd, as retailers capitalized on the craze\u00a0and offered fans the authentic experience of a player jersey<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"9ggv5-3-0\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"647vj\" data-offset-key=\"3qgl3-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"3qgl3-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"3qgl3-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"647vj\" data-offset-key=\"dlnd2-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"dlnd2-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"dlnd2-0-0\">There was still one more watershed moment left to come in the evolution of the hockey jersey, though. A lot of progress had <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"dlnd2-1-0\">been made by<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"dlnd2-2-0\"> the early 2000s, and it was nothing new to see most fans in team apparel at a hockey game. <\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"dlnd2-3-0\">Sports fashion continued to invade the public consciousness through the 1990s and early 2000s, with teams beginning to offer jerseys through their own stores<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"dlnd2-4-0\">. Jerseys exploded across every corner of NHL arenas (as well, of course, as in the NBA, MLB, and NFL).<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"647vj\" data-offset-key=\"eiqb1-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"eiqb1-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"eiqb1-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"647vj\" data-offset-key=\"3ffrl-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"3ffrl-0-0\"><span class=\"complexword\"><span data-offset-key=\"3ffrl-0-0\">However<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"3ffrl-1-0\">, it was once again the Calgary Flames who vaulted the ice-authentic sweater into the realm of essential fan attire<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"3ffrl-2-0\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"647vj\" data-offset-key=\"6uibg-0-0\"><\/div>\n<h3>Calgary Returns to the Playoffs<\/h3>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"647vj\" data-offset-key=\"4vvnn-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"4vvnn-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"4vvnn-0-0\">In 2003\u201304, excitement was once again growing in Calgary, for the first time since the late 80s. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"4vvnn-1-0\">Every Flames fan <\/span><\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"4vvnn-2-0\">fondly<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"4vvnn-3-0\"> remembers their &#8217;04 run Cup Final, and the heartbreak suffered at the hands of the <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/lightning.nhl.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-offset-key=\"4vvnn-4-0\">Tampa Bay Lightning<\/span><\/a><span data-offset-key=\"4vvnn-5-0\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"647vj\" data-offset-key=\"632ut-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"632ut-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"632ut-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"647vj\" data-offset-key=\"b53kl-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"b53kl-0-0\"><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"b53kl-0-0\">By\u00a0reaching\u00a0out on to Flames fans on Reddit, several things became <\/span><\/span><span class=\"complexword\"><span data-offset-key=\"b53kl-1-0\">apparent<\/span><\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"b53kl-2-0\">: that the vibe in Calgary was electric; Fans turned up to arenas all over North America in team sweaters the next year. Teams themselves began marketing the authentic player jersey far more <\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"63ve5-3-0\">aggressively<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"63ve5-4-0\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"63ve5-0-0\">The Red Mile<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"647vj\" data-offset-key=\"2qnjq-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"2qnjq-0-0\"><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"2qnjq-0-0\">One Flames fan on Reddit (who preferred to remain anonymous) described the atmosphere in the city, and how it contributed to the explosion of jersey sales<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"2qnjq-1-0\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"647vj\" data-offset-key=\"3r63l-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"3r63l-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"3r63l-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"647vj\" data-offset-key=\"9hb3l-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"9hb3l-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9hb3l-0-0\">\u201cI had been to several games before the run. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"9hb3l-1-0\">You\u2019d see some people wear the jersey, but there were still tons of people wearing older jerseys or <\/span><\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"9hb3l-2-0\">simply<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"9hb3l-3-0\"> came in regular clothes<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"9hb3l-4-0\">. Once we got into the playoffs, everybody was wearing red.
