Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date\u2019s historical significance to the game. We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for October 9, featuring Brett Hull<\/a><\/strong>.

Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n

Brett Hull Passes Dad in Goals<\/h3>\n

2000:<\/strong> The Dallas Stars<\/a> forward scores his 611th career goal in a 3-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a>. Hull’s goal puts him past his father, Bobby Hull<\/a><\/strong>, on the all-time list. The younger Hull ends up with 39 goals this season as the Stars get swept in round two by the St. Louis Blues<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Brett finishes with 741 career goals before he retires into the 2005-06 season. He reaches the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009.<\/p>\n

Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n

1952:<\/strong> Hall of Fame announcer Danny Gallivan calls his first NHL game on the radio. He calls a 3-2 Chicago Black Hawks<\/a> win over the Montreal Canadiens<\/a> in his first of over 2,000 games before retiring in 1984.<\/p>\n

1970:<\/strong> The Vancouver Canucks<\/a> loss their first game in team history, 3-1, to the Los Angeles King<\/a>s. Defenceman Barry Wilkins<\/a><\/span> <\/strong>scores the first goal in team history early in the third period.<\/p>\n

1978:<\/strong> The Kings acquire goalie Ron Grahame<\/a><\/span><\/strong> from the Boston Bruins<\/a> that gives the B’s a first-round pick. That selection ends up being Hall of Fame defenceman Ray Bourque<\/a><\/strong>. He becomes the second blueliner to get 1,100 with an assist exactly 15 years later.<\/p>\n

1980: Mark Howe<\/a><\/strong> of the Hartford Whalers<\/a> is the first defeneman to score two shorthanded goals in the same game. Hartford still loses, 8-6, to St. Louis.<\/p>\n

1982: Wayne Gretzky<\/a><\/strong> gets a pair of goals in the Edmonton Oilers<\/a> 6-3 victory over the Canucks. It’s 200 goals in 242 games, which is the fastest in league history.<\/p>\n

1993:<\/strong> Gretzky gets two goals and four assists in a 10-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings<\/a>. Tomas Sandstrom<\/a><\/strong> gets a team-record six assists, also.<\/p>\n

1997:<\/strong> The New York Rangers<\/a> are the first team to start a season with four straight ties. Pat LaFontaine<\/a> <\/strong>helps the Rangers salvage a 1-1 draw with the Calgary Flames<\/a>.<\/p>\n

2002:<\/strong> The Kings retire Gretzky’s No. 99 sweater<\/a> before the season-opener with the Phoenix Coyotes<\/a>. Los Angeles also unveils a bronze statue of The Great One in front of the Staples Center.<\/p>\n

2014: Corey Perry<\/a><\/strong> gets a hat trick a 6-4 loss by the Anaheim Ducks<\/a> to the Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a>. Perry is the third player to get three goals in the opener and still lose.<\/p>\n
