Montreal agreed to trade Max Domi and the 78th overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft for Josh Anderson. Both players have had rumours swarming them for quite some time, and they have finally found their new homes.

Key Players

In Max Domi, the Blue Jackets receive a creative offensive forward that can play multiple spots in the lineup. Domi has played winger and centre in his 5-season career, split between the Canadiens and the Arizona Coyotes. In the 2019-20 season, he scored 17 goals and 27 assists in 71 games. He had scored 72 points in 82 games during the 2018-19 season. This staggering drop in production led to rumours of Domi being on the trade block, as you just need to produce in the demanding Montreal market. Domi was originally drafted 12th overall by the Coyotes in the 2013 draft and was traded to Montreal in exchange for Alex Galchenyuk.

In Josh Anderson, the Canadiens receive a power forward with a scoring touch. While Anderson was injured for the majority of the 2019-20 season, he scored 27 goals along with 20 assists in 82 games in the 2018-19 season. Anderson has played his whole career with the Blue Jackets, as they drafted him in the fourth round of the 2012 draft. Over Anderson’s 6 season career, he has scored 65 goals and 50 assists in 267 games. While his point totals may be lacking compared to Domi’s, Anderson brings a physical presence that Domi doesn’t. This adds an extra element to Montreal’s forward core.

What This Means for Both Teams

This trade brings two players that have been on the trade block into fresh positions. Domi’s frequently been a trade chip to the Canadiens because of the breakout season of Nick Suzuki. Now, the Canadiens have a physical winger in Anderson who can add to the skilled forwards the Canadiens have such as Suzuki, Brendan Gallagher, and Phillip Danault. The Blue Jackets land a coveted forward in Domi who can play anywhere in their lineup. In a Columbus forward core depleted from Artemi Panarin‘s departure, this is a great addition. Both teams receive great forwards in need of a change of scenery.

Main Photo:
Embed from Getty Images

The Montreal Canadiens have traded forward Max Domi and a third-round pick in the 2020 draft to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for winger Josh Anderson.
