Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date\u2019s historical significance to the game. We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for October 6, featuring Wayne Gretzky<\/a>.<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Wayne Gretzky<\/a> Makes Hollywood Debut<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

1988:<\/strong> Gretzky makes his Los Angeles Kings<\/a> debut a memorable one with a goal and three assists. His four points guide the Kings to an 8-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings<\/a>. The game is <\/span>the first sellout at the Great Western Forum for a home-opener since 1967.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Great One gets 168 points on 54 goals and leads the Kings to the second round. However, the Calgary Flames<\/a> would sweep Los Angeles on their way to their first Stanley Cup.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Other Notable Events<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

1955:<\/strong> Detroit goalie<\/a> Glenn Hall<\/a><\/strong> starts a streak that will likely never be topped. He makes his first start of 502 in a 3-2 los<\/span>s to the Chicago BlackHawks<\/a>. He plays in the record-setting streak despite being traded to Chicago in 1957-58. His <\/span>record ends in November 1962 against the Montreal Canadiens<\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Toe Blake<\/a><\/strong> wins his coaching debut in the <\/span>Habs<\/span>\u2019 2-0 victory over the Toronto Maple <\/a><\/span>Leafs<\/span><\/a>. Jacques Plante<\/a><\/strong> makes 23 saves for his 11<\/span>th<\/span> shutout. Blake wins Stanley Cups in his first f<\/span>ive seasons in charge.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1960:<\/strong> Montreal retires the No. 9 sweater of Maurice Richard<\/a><\/strong> at the Montreal Forum. He\u2019s the second player after Howie Morenz<\/a><\/strong> to have his sweater retired by the club.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1976:<\/strong> Minnesota North Stars<\/a> forward Roland Eriksson<\/a> <\/strong><\/span>ties a league record with four assists in his debut. He ties Detroit’s <\/span>Dutch Reibel<\/a><\/strong> in 1954, but the New York Rangers<\/a> win, 6-5.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1982:<\/strong> The Quebec Nordiques<\/a> feature all three Stastny brothers in their 6-4 win over the Buffalo <\/a><\/span>Sabres<\/span><\/a>.Peter Stastny<\/a>, Mar<\/a><\/strong><\/span>ian Stastny <\/strong><\/a>and Anton Stastny<\/a> <\/strong><\/span>all contribute to the victory. Peter gets a hat trick, Anton gets a goal and an assist and Marian hands out two assists.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1993: Roger Neilson<\/strong> is the first man to coach six different teams in the Florida Panthers<\/a>\u2019 4-4 tie with Chicago.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2000: Marian Gaborik<\/a><\/strong> scores the first goal in Minnesota Wild<\/a> history. However, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim<\/a> win, 3-1.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2017: James Neal<\/a><\/strong> scores twice as the Vegas Golden Knights<\/a> rally past the Dallas Stars,<\/a> 2-1, in their first game.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2018: Kyle Palmieri<\/a><\/strong> and <\/span>Travis Zajac<\/a><\/strong> each score twice as the New Jersey Devils<\/a> beat the Edmonton Oilers<\/a>, 5-2. The game is held before 12,044 fans at <\/span>Scandinavium<\/span> in Gothenburg, Sweden.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
